Patio Barbecue Ideas

Transform that boring patio into a dining and entertaining center with a barbecue grill.

Few things say summer like a barbecue on your backyard patio. Rather than just buying a simple grill, build a built-in barbecue system into your patio plans. Adding the barbecue from the beginning is probably easiest, but don't shy away from transforming an existing patio into an outdoor eating palace.

L-Shaped Patio Barbecue

A simple L-shaped patio barbecue allows you to install all of your cooking materials and equipment on the short side of the L shape while you use the long side as a dining counter. Include plans for cabinets so you can keep your barbecuing tools and equipment handy. The addition of a small refrigerator fitted beneath the cabinet allows you to keep condiments and sauces handy as well.

Chimney Cooker Barbecue

The most spectacular feature of a chimney cooker patio barbecue plan is the cylinder of concrete that rises as much as 4-feet high. The chimney portion forms a drainpipe that is positioned next to the adjacent fire pit. The chimney automatically draws up the smoke produced in the fire pit. This barbecue plan offers a rustic chimney style while allowing you to barbecue several chickens, ribs, fish or roasts at the same time.

U-Shaped Brick Barbecue

A standard brick barbecue can be created using a cantilevered brick system to hold the grill in place over the fire grate. Reinforced supporting rods can support both the fire grate and the ashtray below. This patio barbecue is design like a U in which the barbecuing itself takes place in the space between the two sides. Versatility of design is allowed through the choice of masonry used to build the pit.

Awning-covered Barbecue Area

Create a patio barbecue that can be enjoyed even during timidly inclement weather by installing an awning over the cooking and dining areas. Install a hood over the grill to take care of the smoke issues, and feel free to plan an outdoor meal even when you see dark clouds on the horizon.

Hibachi Table

A hibachi table allows for private barbecuing for a couple rather than the party atmosphere enjoyed by utilizing a full-size barbecue grill. The hibachi table can be constructed from a low wooden deck table into which you have cut open a hole to place the barbecue grill. Settle down on pillows and enjoy Asian barbecuing in your intimate dining atmosphere.

Full Barbecue Kitchen

A fully equipped barbecue kitchen can be created from a trifold design that molds around the perimeter of your patio. The grill is located in the center, sandwiched between the two sides that bend at an angle away toward the cook. On one side is located the sink, and the other side is a prep area. Look for a kitchen unit that allows the containment of silverware, plates, dishes and glasses in a cabinet located beneath the prep area counter.
