Ornamental faces are one of the main decorations for residential trees other than string lights attached during the holidays or swings hanging from branches. Many trees already appear to have a personality; the trunk, knobs, bark and other features give them a distinct character. Adding to the aura of a tree with an ornamental face is a craft project that can use any number of different materials and range in difficulty and permanence.
Instructions
1. Make a permanent ornamental face on your tree by actually etching into the bark of the tree with woodworking knives. Cover the cuts with tree wound compound to ensure the tree doesn't get attacked by diseases or bugs and to ensure the cutting shapes remain permanent. Stand about 10 feet away from the tree after every few cuts to ensure you like how the face is turning out.
2. Cut spare wood pieces into an ornamental face and nail them to your tree at head height. Cut two circles for eyes and a crescent moon shape for a mouth. Stain the wood to prevent the scraps from decaying or paint it with an exterior paint for color and protection against the weather.
3. Paint a face directly onto the tree using exterior paint. Do this for trees with thin bark, such as birch. Paint with bright colors to make the face stand out, and make the features larger than a regular face so they can be seen from a distance.
4. Cut felt into the shape of a head, and cut out eyes, a nose, and a mouth as well. Staple the face to a tree for a temporary decoration, since weather will eventually destroy the cloth. Find cloth that varies greatly in color from the bark of the tree to make the face stand out.
5. Cut up pieces of a fake holiday wreath so that you have many fake leaves and stems. Reassemble them into individual features of a face and staple them to the tree. This produces a natural-looking face made from stems and leaves that can last through changes in weather.
