Tune Up A Chevy 2 8 V6

The Chevy 2.8 V-6 engine is commonly found in late 1980s Camaros. It is a fuel-injected engine; therefore, there are no carburetor adjustments. This engine uses a distributor, which should be attended to during the tuneup. When changing the wires and the cap, the wires should be marked or they could be put on in the wrong order, causing the car to run badly--or not at all. You should get a tuneup every 30,000 miles. The procedure takes about an hour to complete.

Instructions

1. Remove the spark plug wires and the spark plugs from their boxes. Lay the parts out on the front of the vehicle. Remove one wire from one spark plug and the distributor. If the wire doesn't pull off by hand, use the spark plug wire pliers. Remove the spark plug by using the spark plug socket. Insert the new spark plug and tighten it firmly. Do not overtighten the plug--this will strip the threads.

2. Match the old wire with a new wire for length. Install the new wire. Repeat the process for the other five cylinders.

3. Mark the spark plug wires and the cap, so you know which wire goes to which terminal on the cap. Make one mark on the cap, continuing onto the base of the distributor, so you know which position the cap goes on. Hold the new cap up to the old cap and mark it in the same manner.

4. Loosen the hold down screws on the cap, using the screwdriver or socket, depending on the type of cap used on your distributor. Most GM caps have a spring-loaded pin with a slot for a screwdriver at the top of the pin. The bottom of the pin is an L, which is rotated under the housing to hold the cap on. If you have this type of cap, push in on the pin with the screwdriver, then turn it one-quarter to one-half turn. An aftermarket cap might have bolts, in which case, you should remove them with a socket.

5. Lift the cap off and note the position of the rotor. Mark the distributor housing where the center of the metal piece in the arm of the rotor extends. Unbolt the two rotor-attaching screws, then lift the rotor off the distributor. Install the new rotor in the same exact position and tighten the screws firmly.

6. Hold the new cap next to the old cap. Transfer the spark plug wires to the new cap, following your markings. Reinstall the cap and twist the pins under the distributor housing, using the screwdriver.

Tips Warnings

The capacitor and module, if your year and model 2.8-liter engine is equipped, does not need to be replaced at every tuneup.
