Homemade Key Chains

Customize your keys with a homemade key chain.

Most people bring keys with them everywhere they go. House keys and car keys are almost always carried and there are many types of key chains they are carried on. There are several types of mass-produced key chains on the market, but you are not limited to those choices alone. You can make your own key chain at home with a few craft supplies.

Instructions

Foam Initials Keychain

1. Cut a 2-inch square from a non-adhesive sheet of craft foam with sewing scissors. This will be the base layer of your key chain.

2. Cut a 2-inch circle from a sheet of adhesive craft foam with your scissors. Use a color that complements the color you used for the square.

3. Remove the paper backing from a 1-inch foam letter sticker and press it into the center of the circle. Use a the first letter of your first or last name.

4. Remove the paper backing from the circle and stick it onto the center of the foam square.

5. Punch a hole in one of the corners of the square that show behind the circle. To do this, slide the corner into the hole punch and squeeze down firmly.

6. Slide one end of the ball chain key ring through the hole and close it by sliding the last ball on the chain through the small metal slit so that it rests in the circular end of the slit at the end of the clasp.

Beaded Key Chain

7. Cut a 12-inch strand of leather cord with scissors.

8. Fold the 12-inch cord in half and hang it over a metal key ring so 6 inches hang on either side of the key ring.

9. Slide three pony beads over the both ends so the beads hold the strands together. Use colors of your favorite sports team or colors you like in combination with each other.

10. Slide the beads up to the keyring, allowing just a little play between the ring and the top bead. Knot the cord directly under the third bead and allow the excess leather cord to dangle.
