Interactive Teaching Ideas

Using interactive teaching aids can increase student success.

Interactive teaching aids help teachers explain concepts by providing visual images or audio clips that respond to the user. Most modern interactive teaching aids use computer technology, which makes them highly adaptable. Using computers as teaching aids exposes students to technology that is academically relevant and useful. Teaching aids are meant to support the teacher but should not be the sole method of instruction for any unit.

Interactive White Boards

Give students a chance to interact with presentations with an interactive whiteboard. Interactive whiteboards combine the simplicity of a whiteboard with the flexibility of a computer, allowing teachers and students to present and manipulate interactive media in a presentation format. By merely touching a screen, users can draw, manipulate visual images, and present information. Interactive whiteboards project the computer display on a large screen and respond when the screen is touched, which allows students and teachers to interact more fully with the information being presented.

Digital Presentations

Use digital presentation software to present interactive slide shows to your class. Presentation software allows the teacher to present interactive media in a professional format. Writing directions and notes on the chalkboard can take away from learning time and cannot be restored once erased. Teachers save time by using digital presentations since they allow the teacher to prepare the text and images beforehand and provide the ability to switch quickly between slides. Include movie clips, photos, audio clips and Internet links in digital presentations.

Google Earth

Use Google Earth as a tool for explaining topics in geography, earth science or social studies. Unlike traditional maps, Google Earth explains locations using interactive visual imagery and provides a more realistic representation of the earth. Students can see the curve of the earth, offering an accurate and detailed depiction of the planet that surpasses any map or globe. The program allows users to jump between locations and virtually spins the earth to allow users to virtually travel from one place to another.

Educational Games

Students have fun while they learn through educational games. Though educational games should never be used as the sole method of instruction, many students enjoy interactive learning through games. Interactive games are available for all ages and can be found in nearly every academic subject. For example, in math computer games students receive points for correct answers. Many teachers use board games that feature geography or relevant trivia. Educational games reinforce new learning and require little-to-no preparation on the part of the teacher, making them ideal for small group work or work stations. Find educational computer games online and at your local department store or purchase other types of educational games at classroom supply stores.
