Which setting on Schauer 10amp car battery charger?
The switch for the battery charger manual-automatic setting looks like this. It is a vertical button with a top, middle and bottom setting. On the left of the button it says manual and on the right it says automatic. The center setting must be manual. The top setting says conventional and the bottom setting says maintenance free. What are the differences between the conventional and maintenance free settings? I want to use an automatic setting that will turn the charger off when the battery is fully charged. Logically, I would think that would be the maintenance free setting. Thank you for helping. . More than likely.......Conventional and Maintenance Free are referring to the battery type. Selecting either one would place it in Automatic mode....for that type of battery. The manual setting in the middle would likely feed a constant voltage and current. . The conventional and maintenance free refers to the type of battery I'll bet. Not the usage. Bothy conventional and MF will be automatic modes. Does your battery have removable caps to check water level? It's conventional....if not it's MF. No removable caps. I had it set on Conventional. Now it is set on Maintenance Free. There are three settings: a top one, a middle one, and a bottom one. Wonder could setting it on Conventional while charging a Maintenance Free battery hurt the battery?? It might if left on for a long time.....probably has to do with charging rates. The middle position is for manual use...probably outputs full amperage and you need to keep track of the time when charging. If you really want a correct answer....you might shoot an email to these guys. BATTERY CHARGERS made by SCHAUER Be sure to include the model number. Is it wrong to charge the battery while connected to the car with the negative cable on the negative pole instead of on some large piece of metal under the hood? I just read something about that and wonder if that is true in all cases or in my case? It's a good idea not to....purely for the explosion hazard from hydrogen gas formed while charging. Standard procedure is to connect to the hot terminal then to a good ground on the engine or body. Same as doing a jump....as above, THEN you connect to the running vehicle in the same manner. Removal is the reverse. In reality, with a charger...I doubt it matters. It really doesn't matter if you unplug the charger before disconnecting anything.......that's what I do. I unplug the charger before unhooking the battery because it's pretty when the positive and negative clamps contact each other while energized... I still don't know why they don't stagger the wire length of the clamps...
