Harbor breeze replacement fan switch for ceiling fan

Harbor Breeze replacement fan switch for ceiling fan

I have a ceiling fan with the chain pulled out so I got a 4 wire harbor breeze fan switch at Lowes. It has the same number of wires as the one I am replacing. First, I couldn't get the wires out of the exisiting fan switch, and ended up breaking it. I think I am okay because I did mark the order of my wires. However, now I have this Harbor breeze fan switch that says in the instructions to use a paper clip to release the wires; I assume I insert a paperclip to open the channel to accept the wires too, but I can't get the thing to work. The wires won't go in the holes, don't catch, and won't stay. I can't find anything on the internet about this, does anybody have experience with these type of replacement fan switches? I really need help. Thanks. I'm not sure about that particular switch, but it sounds like it has releases for the wires similar to the standard back-stab connectors on a wall switch, i.e. right next to the actual holes that the wires go into is maybe a small hole that you insert something into (paperclip) to take tension off the spring inside that grips the wire. Then insert wire and remove clip. Alternately, absent a separate hole, you would poke the paperclip into the wiring hole (it's stiff and should open the spring inside) then insert the wire and while holding the wire in the hole, remove the paperclip to put pressure back on the retainer inside. Welcome to the forums! The thing about Harbor Breeze is that it's Lowes' house brand. If your fan is not a Harbor Breeze then those parts may not work for your fan. I would look for a universal 3-speed pull-chain switch with wire leads that can be spliced to the wires in the fan. If Tow Guy's suggestions haven't already resolved the problem! Oh, you know, that worked. The openings were sealed tight, and the wire wasn't strong enough to get past it, but the paper clip did. I wonder why they make stuff so hard! Here I am with my arms in the fan, balancing on a step ladder with a flashlight... Thanks! Glad you got it done, and thank you for telling us that you did - and how you did it.
