Use An Extension Cord With A Surge Protector

Often you may need to connect multiple electronic devices to an outlet. One of the easiest ways to complete this connection safely is with a surge protector. This can prevent electrical surges from damaging your equipment. Using an extension cord can allow you to surge protect from a distance. Follow these steps and your equipment can be safely connected to a surge protector with an extension cord.

Instructions

Use an Extension Cord With a Surge Protector

1. Purchase a surge protector. There are a variety of 10 amp surge protectors available that can provide good protection. Ten amps should be sufficient because most household outlets run through 10 or 15 amp breakers.

2. Purchase an extension cord. Be sure the the amps of the extension cord match the amps of the surge protector. Choose the length of the extension cord to match the distance you need from the wall socket.

3. Plug the extension cord into the wall socket. Avoid creases and bends in the cord.

4. Plug the surge protector into the extension cord. Plug your electronic devices into the surge protector.

5. Flip the power switch on the surge protector. The light should show protected or active and the electronic devices should be operational. All of your electronic devices should now be surge protected.

Tips Warnings

You can plug the surge protector into the wall, plug the extension cord into the surge protector and plug one electronic device into the extension cord. This will provide surge protection.

The surge protector must say protected or grounded. Do not add more than one electronic device to an extension cord or you can trigger the breaker.
