Newb needs help with tecumseh 35 hp engine

newb needs help with tecumseh 3.5 hp engine

Hi, I am new to this forum. i have an older Tecumseh 3.5hp horizontal shaft engine that is running like poo! (no model number on it) I can start it with no choke but when i try to throttle it up it sputters coughs and back fires alot..???? I think it may be timing but i am not sure. How do you time this thing? Lots of spark, lots of fuel and lots of power when running properly. I have cleaned the carb and added NEW fuel but it does the same thing. Any help would be great. Pictures of time it would be even better! Thanks, Gordon Hello Gordon! Timing it is so easy pictures won't even be necessary. The flywheel key is the only thing that times your engine. Just remove the flywheel nut and look at the key that holds it in place on the crankshaft. If it is sheared, then replace it. This usually happens when you hit a heavy or immovable object like a root or brick. This engine has a solid key on shaft, but does have moveable timing on the coil. Any ideas? Gordon There was a recent post on Tecumseh timing, was new to me then I had one brought to my shop after Cheese and Puey did a most excelent job of explaining the procedure. I found this manual (.pdf) online, http://www.cpdonline.com/692509.pdf Rots a goodies in it....including timing procedures for the different types of ignition systems..... Bought a carn rebuild kit and carb cleaner..... reassembled.... timed... still runs like sh!t but better then before! I think it may be time to get new motor Not enough compression or something. idles great but when throttle is applied it sputters coughs then finally goes like a bat outta hell...lol Throttle response is to crappy on this engine. ANYONE KNOW OF A ENGINE WITH SNAPPY THROTTLE RESPONSE IN A 3.5 HP RANGE? Gordon Ok, it is definitely an OLD engine if it has that kind of timing adjustment. Does the engine ever run properly? When? (you said lots of power when running properly). Have you tried a new plug? Checked valve clearances? Checked for water in fuel, or old fuel? Hi Cheese, Once in a while it runs good but only when it feels like it... I have replaced every part of the carb and played with the timing to no end but it still refuses to run properly. The fuel is brand new premium grade, fresh oil in engine as well. I am stumped..... It seems to have ok compression as it takes some arm power to pull start it. The governor has been disconnected long before i got the engine. Would this affect it? There is a little shaft sticking out that controls the governor but i have not tried playing with that at all yet. Any suggestions would help lots... Gordon Well the govenor has a major function in the process, it attempts to maintain a constant engine rpm as the load changes on the engine. Without it working properly the engine could be fine and you go to mow, the shortest grass could cause it to lug and die. Did you have a look at this link I posted for tecumseh manual? I has a procedure for every thing you have mentioned here so far including the govenor. Chapter 4 is dedicated entirely to govenors. http://www.cpdonline.com/692509.pdf Thanks for the link. I will have to research it! I think the governor is the problem. Gordon I can only guess, but I dare say a previous owner has done away with the external components because there is a problem with the internal governor gear and spool. Not only this but without ID #'s you will have difficulty in obtaining the correct external parts needed to get this hooked back up. The internal components are generally all the same and numbers shouldn't be required for such.
