MAYTAG MDB-3 Dishwasher door latch

The door latch is broken on this 28 month old Maytag. The door stays shut but it takes a little force to open. Can I ignore this and continue using the unit or is it eventually going to require a crowbar? It this difficult to replace? Is this a potential fire hazard? Thanks My 26 month old is doing the same. Feels like the handle plastic is broken inside. It unlatches, the handle fits loosely then you have to pull hard to open. Looking into taking off front panel. This is a common problem in the new Maytag dishwashers. It is where the handle attaches to the latch assembly that is broken. It is not a fire hazard. If you are off warranty, the steps to replace are: 1. Shut off power supply to dishwasher 2. Remove door panel screws (inner door liner). 3. Handle will be broken, and easy to remove. Pay attention to how it is positioned in the latch assembly. 4. You will find the new one a little difficult to install. I use channel lock pliers and GENTLY squeeze the latch assembly together just below where the handle is installed. The new handle easily pops into place. 5. Re-assemble, and test door latch. 6. The replacement latch was under $10 -($100+ less than a Maytag servive call) It appears that Maytag modified the original latch which makes me wonder if they anticipated failure? Anyway, my wife was happy we had repaired it. When I came home from work on Monday, she had left a note stating she was sorry but the dishwasher would not engage. It was then I realized I had skipped #6 TURN the POWER on! Thanks again!
