Old home, 3 inch dryer vent, fire hazard?
My friend just bought an old house, it has a 3 inch dryer vent that disappears into a wall and exits at the roof. We bought a 4 to 3 inch conversion and hooked up his dryer. We went on the roof and air comes out freely, is it a fire hazard? What kind of tubing is in the wall. If it is the old plastic flexible stuff replaced it. it is metal going up through the roof like a smoke stack with no cover on it You mean the 3 pipe sticks straight up to the sky? No cover? Buy a stack cover. If it is rigid steel duct, it may not be a fire hazard, but could violate local code. I personally would not want a dryer duct buried in the wall, but appears OK under IRC code. Rigid ducts is min .016 metal wall, no screws at joints. And it should be thoroughly cleaned periodically. 2006 IRC M1502.3 requires duct size per manufacturers recommendations, for most that is 4. M1502.4-transition ducts shall not be concealed within construction.... a transition duct is the flex duct from the dryer to the rigid duct. Max allowed is 8', no plastic allowed.
