Diet For Pregnant Women After Gastric Bypass

It has been widely believed that pregnancy after weight loss surgery was responsible for complications such as restricted fetus growth and internal bleeding. Data published by the March of Dimes suggests that an advantage to pregnancy after surgery is that babies are protected from obesity complications such as gestational diabetes or high blood pressure. Further research also suggests that fetus growth complications and nutritional issues can be avoided if a supportive diet and nutritional regime are closely monitored.

Nutrition and Diet

According to babymed.com, the chances of having a safe and healthy pregnancy are increased if you wait at least 12-18 months after surgery to become pregnant. Nutrition and diet is something that you will want discuss in depth and at length with your physician to determine specific needs that may exist, in addition to those needs created by bypass surgery. Women who have undergone gastric bypass must take prenatal vitamins in addition to the standard supplements administered post surgery. If you are attempting to become pregnant it is advisable to begin taking pre natal vitamins before becoming pregnant. Folic acid, vitamin A and vitamin B12 are the most important supplements and should be taken consistently while pregnant. You will also want to make sure that you are getting enough calcium, iron and vitamin D. Even if you are taking daily supplements, it is important to eat a diet that is rich in these essential vitamins and minerals. To ensure that you are getting enough folic acid and B12, make sure that your diet includes at least one serving of lean meat or eggs in addition to milk or yogurt. The best food source for folic acid and B12 is liver. Fruits and vegetables should be the main focus of the diet with an emphasis on spinach, collard greens and kale. These leafy greens are an excellent source of calcium and folic acid. Flax seeds, sesame seeds and oranges are also great sources of calcium. Vitamin D can be difficult to find in food, especially while pregnant as many women are advised to avoid fish, but taking one tablespoon of cod liver oil every other day is a great way to ensure that you are getting enough of this vitamin. Be sure to check with your doctor before taking cod liver oil.

Weight Gain

Many women fear weight gain after gastric bypass surgery but it is absolutely necessary in order for the baby to grow healthily and reach a safe weight. It is recommended for women to gain about 20 to 25 pounds during pregnancy, and failure to do so may result in fetal abnormalities or growth retardation. It is essential to follow a nutrient-rich diet, take daily supplements and vitamins and to not attempt any weight loss diets while pregnant. Following these simple guidelines will increase your chances for a healthy and complication-free pregnancy after gastric bypass surgery.
