Vitamin Water Information

The purest energy drink -- water

As of 2010, there are a myriad energy and sports drinks to be found on grocery store shelves. Beverages like vitamin waters claim to be fortified with nutritional value greater than that of plain water and offer consumers a way to boost energy and increase daily dosages of vitamins.

Identification

Bottled Water

Vitamin-fortified bottled water can be found alongside mineral water, sparkling water and bottled and canned sodas on grocery store shelves. Vitamin water is marked with labels that indicate which vitamins and minerals have been added and how much of a person's daily dose of each is contained per serving.

Significance

A study done in 2004, by research firm Oy Foodfiles Ltd. of Finland, showed that men and women given mineral water fortified with calcium, vitamins B6, B12 and D plus folic acid experienced an increase in folate levels. This proved that folate could be ingested via water and properly utilized by the body.

Considerations

Use a bottle of water to exercise your arms and then quench your thirst.

Mayo Clinic nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D., claims that daily vitamin dosage recommendations can be obtained by eating and drinking a balanced diet. She warns that using vitamin water or fortified, flavored water in a weight-loss program could backfire because of the extra calories contained in it.
