If you don't like fish, taking omega-3 capsules will enable you to safely incorporate omega-3 into your diet. Side effects are minimal, but recognizing them will help you choose a safe supplement.
Discomfort
Omega-3 supplements may cause gastrointestinal upset, including heartburn, indigestion, belching or stomachache. Though uncomfortable, these symptoms often fade within a week or two.
Sickness
Taking large doses of omega-3 give some individuals nausea or diarrhea, in which case you should see your doctor to determine how best to incorporate omega-3 in your diet.
Bleeding
Although rare, a serious side effect of taking too much omega-3 is an increased risk of hemorrhage or bleeding. If you experience this, stop taking your omega-3 supplement and see your doctor immediately.
Vitamin E
If you are taking omega-3 capsules daily, consider taking a vitamin E supplement with it. A side effect of long-term intake of omega-3 is vitamin E deficiency, though many omega-3 supplements now include vitamin E in their capsules.
Reducing Side Effects
If side effects continue for more than one or two weeks, switch brands. If side effects persist, see your doctor to determine an omega-3 dose that will be comfortable and safe for you.
