As most of us know, vitamins and minerals are an important part of our daily nutritional needs. But with all the vitamins out there, understanding what each vitamin does can be quite confusing. One of vitamin D's most recognized functions is the role it plays in helping the body absorb calcium, which contributes to bone and joint health.

Due to its affect on the body's bones and joints, individuals who take vitamin D regularly are less likely to suffer from illnesses such as osteoporosis and arthritis. In addition, studies performed by the National Institutes of Health suggest that vitamin D can help prevent colon and colorectal cancers.


Benefits


The benefits of vitamin D are not limited only to cancer prevention and bone strengthening. In fact, vitamin D is also a strong immune booster and can help decrease blood pressure and increase insulin secretion. Many scientists also believe that regular consumption of vitamin D may help prevent Alzheimer's Disease.


Considerations


So where does vitamin D come from? Well, our bodies produce the nutrient naturally, but in order for our bodies to produce adequate amounts, we must be exposed to sunlight. Although studies by the Center for Disease Control suggest that one hour per week is an adequate amount of exposure time, many adults need more than this. However, because of the risks associated overexposure, many adults do not feel comfortable exposing themselves to the sun. As a result, vitamin D is usually added to milk and supplements are also widely available.


Warning


As with most beneficial vitamins and minerals, too much vitamin D can be harmful to a person's health. Although a vitamin D overdose is extremely rare, it can happen. Because vitamin D increases the body's calcium levels, if left untreated, over consumption of vitamin D can cause calcification of the body's major organs, kidney stones and bone loss.

Due to the severe risks associated with a vitamin D overdose, the Food and Nutrition Board suggests an intake of no more than 2,000 IU per day for adults. In addition, because many medicines can affect the effects of vitamin D on the body, you should always let your doctor know if you are taking a vitamin D supplement.
