How Keep Squirrels Out Of My Flowers

Squirrels are a flower garden pest.

Squirrels are fun to watch when they chase each other up tree trunks or nose around for last year's buried treasure, but when they start digging around in your garden and eating your flowers and bulbs, they become a nuisance. Squirrels dig up flower bulbs and feast on fruits and seeds. When marauding squirrels invade your flower garden, you do not have to tolerate them. A few simple tricks will help keep these ravenous rodents out of your garden.

Instructions

Garlic and Pepper

1. Apply a mixture of 1/2 granulated garlic and 1/2 cayenne pepper over the seed or bulb when you plant your flower garden before you cover them with dirt.

2. Sprinkle more of the mixture over the seeds and bulbs after you have covered them with dirt.

3. Reapply the mixture after watering or a downpour. The garlic masks the scent of the seeds and bulbs, and the pepper irritates the squirrels.

Don't Feed the Squirrels

4. Feed your pets inside. If you have outdoor pets and leave their food outside, it will attract squirrels.

5. Remove bird feeders if squirrels are feeding at them. Bird seed attracts squirrels. Replace the feeders with squirrel-proof models.

6. Store all pet foods, bird seed and other squirrel attractants in squirrel-proof containers if you must keep them outside. A galvanized trash can is a good option.

Other Deterrants

7. Spread mothballs around your flower garden. The will act as a squirrel deterrent.

8. Soak rags with vinegar, attach them to stakes, and place them around the flowers. Squirrels do not like the smell of vinegar.

9. The grounds from your coffee can deter squirrels.

Sprinkle used coffee grounds around you garden.
