Synthetic vitamins are made through a chemical process that uses coal tar derivatives. They are less expensive than natural vitamins, and give the manufacturer more consistency and control of the product. They must meet the high standards of the United States Pharmacopeia, which assigns them a grade.
Vs. Natural Vitamins
Coal tar is a material derived from fossil-fuel sources. It's used in colorings, paints and many other materials. It is also a known carcinogen. Natural vitamins are made with natural products or foods that have co-factors, or co-enzymes, which help process vitamins in the body. Synthetic vitamins steal the needed substance from the body or organs, often depleting it of nutrients it needs to function. Vitamin C has bioflavonoids and is made without extreme additives, heat or pressure. Bioflavonoids help the body absorb vitamin C. No chemicals are added to natural vitamins.
Potency
Much of the synthetic vitamin passes through the urine unabsorbed. Real food and some natural vitamins are better sources of individual vitamins than synthetic ones. Synthetic vitamins are highly processed with many artificial and toxic ingredients that are not good for the body.
