Vitamins To Stop Hair Growth

Hair, which is mainly composed of keratis, is a protein filament that develops from follicles in the dermis. The follicles only produce new cells over a certain period of time known as the growth phase. The growth phase is then followed by the rest phase, wherein the follicles stop producing cells. There are some vitamins that are thought to slow or even stop the growth of hair.

Basics

The use of vitamins to inhibit hair growth is akin to laser hair removal techniques. Such measures are taken for the purpose of eventually stopping the growth of hair on the body. What makes the use of vitamins different is that its ingredients come from natural sources such as plants. The principle behind using vitamins to stop hair growth is that it interferes with the normal growth and rest phases of the follicles. Usually, it prevents ornithine decarboxylase or the enzyme that promotes hair growth from being effective. Certain vitamins can also weaken the hair follicle so that it is unable to support the hair.

Vitamin A

Large amounts of Vitamin A in the body can actually stop hair from growing. Excess amounts of it can result in the shedding of hair known as telogen effluvium. This condition is a form of non-scarring alopecia and has the symptoms of acute hair loss. Telogen effluvium is usually a reaction to metabolic stresses or the taking of medication. In fact, some medications that are derived from vitamin A can cause permanent hair loss.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E acetate is a kind of antioxidant that is found in some hair growth inhibitor products. It is a powerful antioxidant that guards the cells from free radicals. In addition to this, it prevents the peroxidation or the loss of electrons from cell lipids. Vitamin E is fat-soluble can help protect against the destruction of skin and hair properties.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is a kind of water-soluble vitamin that promotes the production of male hormones such as testosterone, which can retard hair growth. This particular vitamin is needed in the metabolism of protein and red blood cells. In addition to this, Vitamin B6 is necessary for the production of hemoglobin that carry oxygen to the tissues. Vitamin B6 is found in a variety of foods such as cereals, beans, and meats. It can also be found in some cosmetic products that retard the growth of hair.

Imbalance

More often than not, vitamins can stop the growth of hair when an imbalance exists. The situation can either be having too much or too little of a certain type of vitamin. For example, inositol (a form of Vitamin B) can stunt hair growth if there is a deficiency. On the other hand, too many retinoids (the acidic form of Vitamin A) can prevent hair from growing at a normal rate.
