Signs & Symptoms Of A Vitamin D Defiency

Signs & Symptoms of a Vitamin D Defiency

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin found in many foods such as milk, eggs and cheese. Your body also absorbs vitamin D from the sun. However, lack of sunshine and proper diet has left many people deficient in this crucial vitamin. Dr. Marcelle Pick, is an obstetrician/gynecologist and co-founder of The Women to Women Clinic. She says that vitamin D deficiency is a widespread problem that is related to several health conditions such as heart disease, depression and osteoporosis.

Severe Sweating

According to The Wrong Diagnosis website, profuse sweating is a sign of vitamin D deficiency. This can also cause a person to feel restless and irritable. It can also take time to correct a deficiency.

Taking supplements and eating food rich in vitamin D should help after several months of consumption. If you are severely deficient in vitamin D, you should see your doctor right away.

Bone Malformations

The Wrong Diagnosis website says, a serious sign of vitamin D deficiency is bone malformations. This happens over time because vitamin D and calcium work together to build healthy bones and teeth.

When the body is lacking this essential vitamin, the bones can soften, resulting in malformations. This can also cause bowlegs and enlargement of the wrists and skull. This can be a serious problem, especially for elderly people who are prone to fractures.

Low Immunity

Another major sign of a vitamin D deficiency is low immunity. Vitamin D is essential for a healthy immune system because this nutrient encourages the body to make natural antibiotics that off invaders. If you are getting sick with the flu and other major viruses all the time, you may be lacking vitamin D. Low immunity can also be a result of an underlying medical condition.

Weight Loss

Dr. Pick also says another sign of vitamin D deficiency is severe weight loss. If you notice that you are losing weight and suffering from other symptoms of vitamin D deficiency, then see a doctor. Dr. Pick recommends drinking fortified milk and getting sunshine because your body cannot make vitamin D on its own.

Renal Problems

According to the Women to Women website another sign is kidney (renal) problems. This can result in a host of other symptoms such as urinary tract infections, and blood in the urine. The kidneys are not able to function properly in people who are severely deficient in vitamin D.

Fatigue

Another sign is fatigue and low energy levels, according to the Women to Women website. If you are tired all the time, you may be suffering from an underlying medical condition or vitamin D deficiency. Fatigue can lead to other problems like difficulty sleeping and depression. Fatigue is also linked to anemia (low red blood cell) count, so you may need to supplement your diet with vitamin D and iron.
