Rutin Remedies

Rutin has been a component of vitamin supplements for many years. Originally, along with other antioxidants, it went by the name vitamin P. As doctors learn more about rutin, though, they're discovering it has benefits beyond what was first known. Rutin may be recommended for several specific conditions.

Identification

Rutin is a flavonoid, sometimes called a bioflavonoid, which is a type of compound that gives fruits, flowers, herbs and vegetables their color. Rutin is found in many fruits, particularly in the rinds of citrus fruits. It's also in buckwheat seeds and the herb rue. It works as an antioxidant, protecting the body from oxidation and free radicals.

Usage

Rutin is usually taken in supplement form, though it can be found naturally in citrus fruits and some herbs. If you decide to take rutin, you should talk to your doctor about the best form to take. Rutin helps the body absorb vitamin C, so you may want to take the two in combination. Many multi-vitamins contain rutin, because it's been recognized for its health benefits for some time. Older literature may refer to it as vitamin P, though that name has fallen out of favor.

Benefits

Rutin is primarily used to treat vein issues. It strengthens the capillary walls and can increase blood flow. Rutin may help with varicose veins, venous insufficiency, poor circulation or a tendency to bruise easily. There's some indication it may help to lower cholesterol and reduce hypertension and atherosclerosis. It could be beneficial in stroke prevention as well.

Rutin may work as an anti-inflammatory, and it may help with hemorrhoids. As an antioxidant, it works to reduce free radicals in the body.

Side Effects

Some people who take rutin may experience dizziness, light-headedness, fatigue or a racing heart. Others may have a headache or upset stomach, sometimes with vomiting or diarrhea. In some cases, people taking rutin suffer from hair loss or muscle stiffness. You should talk to your doctor about any of these side effects.

If taking rutin causes you to have chest pain, difficulty breathing or to break out in a rash, stop taking rutin and talk to your doctor. You may be allergic.

Warning

Pregnant women should not take rutin. Those who are breastfeeding or who are planning to become pregnant should stay away from it as well. In addition, those who have any heart or blood conditions should talk to their doctor about whether using rutin as part of a treatment plan is a good idea. Side effects may be worse in those with circulatory issues, so you should not take it apart from your doctor's recommendation.
