What Are Vitamins Made Out Of

Vitamins are the chemical compounds needed for overall good health. The body does not make vitamins. They must be provided by nutritious foods. Due to diet deficiencies, vitamin supplements may be used. They are made in natural and synthetic forms.

Uses

During the processing of food, or due to a poor diet, vitamins may be eliminated or diluted, causing vitamin deficiencies. This can cause a number of health problems. Vitamin supplements are used to correct these deficiencies.

Natural or Synthetic?

According to Dr. Maoshing Ni, in his book, "Secrets of Longevity," natural vitamins have the highest bioavailability. Extracts are made from organic, whole foods. Synthetic vitamins are made from petrochemicals that have very little bioavailability.

Fat-soluble and Water-soluble Vitamins

According to Dr. Larry Larry Altshuler, in his book "Balanced Healing," vitamins are either fat-soluble or water-soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins (Vitamins A, D, E, and K) can be stored in the body and used as needed. The rest are water-soluble and cannot be stored.

Effectiveness

According to Dr. Altshuler, synthetic vitamins are only 50 percent as effective as natural vitamins. Synthetic vitamins are made from natural or synthetic sources and undergo a chemical process of conversion or alteration.

Warning

Vitamins, minerals and herbs are considered dietary supplements by the US Food and Drug Administration. As a result, they are not subject to the same quality controls as drugs.
