Set Up a Practice Space
1. Choose a quiet spot. Avoid noisy areas like the living room or your home office.
2. Create a peaceful environment. Turn off all phones and alarms. Light candles and adjust the lighting to a comfortable, serene level. Choose an inspirational setting with no distractions. For instance, consider practicing in front of a large window that overlooks a pretty outdoor view.
3. Seclude yourself. Let your spouse and kids know that you need privacy for a set time. Keep the pets out of your practice area by shutting the door.
4. Consider using music in the background. Light, inspirational music can set a mood or drown out distracting noises like cars driving by or the television in the next room.
5. Keep your space clean. In yoga, cleanliness is a priority and should be a part of every practice. Shower before and after practice and empty your stomach beforehand.
6. Use a space heater to replicate the hot yoga temperatures of Bikram classes.
Select the Right Bikram Yoga DVD
7. Choose an appropriate level of ability. Generally, you can find classifications like level 1, 2 or 3.
8. Look for famous yoga teachers. For example, Baron Baptiste is a well-known instructor who has a line of DVDs.
9. Choose a DVD that comes with a book. Some Bikram DVDs have accompanying instructional manuals or guidelines for students.
10. Check for DVDs at your local Bikram studio. Studios have access to the latest releases and also base their buys on student feedback.
11. Select a DVD that has received good feedback. Some Web sites that sell yoga DVDs also include user feedback and ratings. If you purchase the DVD at a store, ask the salesperson for suggestions. .
