There is no known cure for ringing of the ears (tinnitus), but many feel that certain vitamins and herbal supplements help. According to MerckSource, the use of vitamins and supplements for tinnitus has not been entirely proven, and caution is recommended.
Ginkgoo Biloba
Ginkgo extract is a popular herbal supplement used to treat tinnitus. Ginkgo is thought to help ease tinnitus.
Bioflavonoids
Some researchers feel that lemon bioflavonoid extract is beneficial for tinnitus. Like gingko, it is believed to improve circulation in the ear. A popular product is Lipoflavonoid Plus that contains B-vitamins and bioflavonoids among other supplements. A similar product is Mason's Ear Health.
Zinc and B-Vitamins
A deficiency of zinc and B-vitamins (especially B-12) may increase tinnitus. Thus, a zinc and B-vitamins supplement may help.
Magnesium
Magnesium deficiency may have an important role in causing tinnitus. It is believed that magnesium protects inner ear nerves by acting as a glutamate inhibitor. Excess glutamate is believed to contribute to tinnitus.
Warnings
Herbal supplements and certain vitamins can be harmful to your health, and it is recommended that you seek the advice of a physician before taking any such products. Since many of these products are not regulated, knowing the proper dosage is particularly tricky.
