You may be taking vitamins to ensure you are getting enough nutrients in your diet. But is it possible to overdose on vitamins? Taken to excess, it is possible to take too many vitamins and other supplements.
The Facts
It is the amount of vitamins consumed that is important. Anything can be toxic if taken in an excessive amount, including water and oxygen. Vitamins are no exception.
Daily Value
Both food and vitamin products are labeled with the Percent Daily Value. This percent is based on a 2,000-calorie diet for adults 18 and older.
Types
Water-soluble vitamins (B and C) can't be stored by the body, so excess is simply excreted.
Overdose
Fat-soluble vitamins can lead to overdose if taken in large doses for an extended period of time. Too much vitamin A can cause damage to the nervous system and liver. Too much vitamin E can cause bleeding and fatigue.
Considerations
If you take a multivitamin each day that contains approximately 100 percent of the recommended daily value of most nutrients, you are safe. Keep in mind that more is not necessarily better. Taking mega doses of vitamins can lead to overdose.
