Make Your Own Belly Bar

Bars with pumpkin seeds help repair a pregnant mother's muscles.

"Being pregnant, you really want to make sure you are doing all the right things for your baby," states Danielle, a Gig Harbor, Wash., mother and Bellybar enthusiast. The Bellybar Company was founded in 2005 by two soon-to-be-mothers. Looking for the right things to eat, to ensure nutrition for their growing fetuses, the ladies invented Bellybars: healthy granola bar-like snacks. The snacks are filled with ingredients that help babies grow. Throw together a fresh recipe and bake your own Bellybar-like treats to feed you and your baby what it needs.

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Lubricate your baking pan with a thin coat of olive oil.

2. Combine the oats, flour, baking soda, vanilla to a medium-size bowl. Mix well. Add the applesauce, flaxseed, molasses and brown sugar. Stir until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Add pumpkin seeds, figs and almonds and stir. Use ingredients especially important to mothers-to-be and unborn children. Molasses, for example, includes a high source of vitamin B6 -- important to the development of a fetus. Pumpkin seeds and figs, on the other hand, contain high levels of magnesium and potassium, respectively.

3. Pour and mold the combination into the baking pan. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes. Remove the pan and allow the bars to cool for 10 to 12 minutes. Cut the bars into small squares or rectangles before serving.
