Become A Private Label Manufacturer

Private labels allow your clients to offer store brands.

Private label manufacturers produce products that are not sold under a brand name. These manufacturers typically are small businesses that work on a much smaller scale than nationally recognized brands. Private label companies often have the same quality product at a much lower price, according to the Private Labels Manufacturers Association.

Instructions

1. Determine the type of product or products you plan to manufacture. Any product can contain a private label as long as you are not infringing on copyrights and patents held by other companies. Your operation needs to include equipment required to make the products, space to operate the manufacturing processes and logo creation materials. Staff requirements may include product researchers, product developers, sales team members, operators and graphic designers.

2. Find a niche for your company. Instead of offering a slew of products under a private label, consider sticking to one type of product. For instance, private label manufacturers may produce vitamin supplements, foods, beverages or baby products.

3. Join a support association for your business. For instance, the Private Labels Manufacturers Association allows you to attend events and get connected with suppliers who are looking into offering private label goods.

4. Attend trade shows to present your products. Private label manufacturers attend trade shows to meet with wholesalers, discount stores and merchandisers to find interested buyers. Set out samples and have product and contact information ready to give interested parties.

5. Provide label options to customers. Private label manufacturers give the chance to start-ups along with chain stores to sell products under their store brand name. Employ logo designers and graphic artists to help create labels for clients looking to sell your goods.

6. Market your business aggressively. Unlike name brand companies, private label manufacturers do not rely on brand recognition to build their client base. Instead, create a website, make cold calls to suppliers and send packets with product information to potential clients.
