Get Rid Of Old Vitamins

Once vitamins have expired, it is tempting simply to throw them into the nearest trash can. While this might be the fastest disposal method, it is not necessarily the safest. There are a few things you can do to get rid of old vitamins safely.

1. Contact your local pharmacy. Many large pharmacies offer a free recycling or disposal program. These programs allow you to bring expired medications and vitamins to the pharmacy for proper disposal.

2. Call your local waste-disposal company. Some companies will make special arrangements to dispose of your vitamins or medications. Pick-up for these items usually falls on a different day than your normal garbage pick-up, and an extra charge may apply.

3. Contact your local landfill to find out hazardous waste disposal drop-off times and locations. Many counties have hazardous waste disposal procedures in place and will make drop-off available to the community free of charge. Be sure to find out how landfill authorities would like your vitamins to be packaged prior to disposal. Most will require you to remove all personal information from prescription vitamin bottles before dropping them off, or dissolve the vitamins with alcohol while they are still in their containers.
