The Best Vitamins For Skin & Nails

Vitamins can help grow healthy skin and fingernails

Vitamins are good for our bodies for a variety of reasons. If your skin has a damaged or wrinkled appearance, vitamins may be able to help. Vitamins also can help fingernails grow stronger and more quickly. Vitamins help skin and nails by providing strength and structure. You can get most vitamins through different types of foods, but they are also available in pill or cream form.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps the skin because it can reduce the damaging effects of sun exposure. Free radicals are caused by the sun's UV rays, pollution and smoke. They can cause damage to collagen and elastin, which are important to the skin's structure. Damaging those elements can cause wrinkles and premature aging. Vitamin C is a free radical scavenger, so helps counter that damage. The vitamin also helps with nail growth, as vitamin C deficiencies can cause hangnails. Vitamin C is available through citrus fruits and some vegetables, but can also be taken in pill form.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E works in much the same way as vitamin C, in that it helps with sun damage on the skin. When vitamins E and A are taken together, it can also reduce the risk of skin cancer. Vitamin E can be used in a lotion, and it can also smooth rough skin and soften cuticles.

Vitamin B Complex

Biotin is a member of the vitamin B family. It is very important for skin and nails because it forms the basis of their cells. A biotin deficiency can cause flaky skin or even hair loss. The body makes biotin, but you can also get it through foods such as bananas, eggs, oatmeal and rice. Niacin is another type of vitamin B and it helps the skin stay moisturized. Vitamin B deficiencies can cause dry, fragile nails.
