What Is Melatonin Vitamin Dosage

What Is Melatonin Vitamin Dosage?

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland. It helps regulate sleep, boosts immune system functioning, and is an antioxidant. Melatonin extracts are available over the counter as a dietary supplement in the United States.

Uses

Melatonin's primary use is as a sleep aid. Research indicates it is effective at altering the wake-sleep cycle and so it is used to treat jet-lag. Its use as an anti-aging supplement is more controversial as research on anti-aging effects has mostly been done on animals.

Efficacy

Research indicates melatonin decreases the amount of time needed to fall asleep. Several studies also suggest that melatonin reduces the number of sleep disruptions during the night.

Side Effects

Data indicates that adverse side effects such as headaches, nausea, dizziness and daytime drowsiness were not significant when compared to placebos. Side effects do not generally occur with dosages below 6 mg.

Recommended Dosage

The recommended dosage of the dietary supplement of melatonin is 3 mg. It is recommended that dosages not exceed 6 mg.

Extended Use

Data indicates that the effectiveness of melatonin does not decrease with extended use. Some experts have suggested that extended use may reduce the natural production of melatonin and therefore leads to the need to increase dosages over time. If you develop a tolerance for melatonin, try skipping it once a week.

Warnings

Do not take melatonin if you have a kidney or liver disease or a history of stroke or neurological disorders. Women who wish to become pregnant should not take melatonin.
