Pregnancy can be an exciting---but overwhelming---time in a woman's life. There are many things to consider, including what type of prenatal vitamin to take. The differences in prescription and over-the-counter vitamins should be weighed before making a decision.
Prenatal Vitamins
Prenatal vitamins are vitamins that pregnant women take to insure they get enough essential vitamins and minerals, especially folic acid and iron. Some women also take them if they are trying to conceive or if they are lactating.
Are They Different
Usually prescription prenatal vitamins have a slightly higher amount of folic acid and iron than what is in over-the-counter brands. For example, many over-the-counter prenatal vitamins contain about 800 mcg of folic acid, while the prescription pills might contain around 1000 mcg. However, changes in regulations have allowed some over-the-counter pills to include the same amount of folic acid as prescription pills, though not all do. Ingredients may vary slightly as well; for example, some over-the-counter brands have added herbs in them, which have not been proven safe for pregnant women, and therefore, doctors do not recommend them.
Problems
Pregnant women, especially those already battling morning sickness, might experience nausea when taking prenatal vitamins. This is usually caused by the higher levels of certain nutrients; taking a prescription prenatal vitamin may be more difficult for the stomach, due to the higher levels of iron and folic acid.
Cost
The cost is also a factor when deciding which type to take. If your insurance covers prescription medications, you might be able to get your prescription prenatal vitamins at a reduced cost or for free. On the other hand, if you are without insurance or if your insurance does not cover prescriptions, an over-the-counter vitamin is a more affordable option.
Your Doctor
Discuss these issues with your doctor before choosing a vitamin or if you are interested in switching types. He can help you determine which type is best for you based on your financial situation, pregnancy symptoms and your general health.
