Alternative Bacterial Vaginosis Medication

Bacterial vaginosis infections are uncomfortable. For several reasons, you may not want to take an antibiotic to cure your infection. You may be more comfortable using an alternative form of treatment. Several remedies which come from nature's own bounty are available. These include echinacea, lactobacillus acidophilus, tea tree oil and vitamin E. Your doctor can help you find the preparation which may best help you cure your infection.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus Suppositories

Use a daily lactobacillus acidophilus suppository for up to two weeks to cure a current vaginosis infection. If you suffer from repeated bacterial vaginosis infections, insert a suppository once a week to prevent a return of your symptoms. While you are using these suppositories, make lifestyle adjustments such as not using personal care items which have perfumes, reducing your exposure to spermicides and other chemicals and trying to minimize friction. Visit your doctor to find out if your vaginosis could be caused by a treatable medical condition. Researchers are conducting a study and looking at the effects of two lactobacilli (L. crispatus and L. jensenii), which are commonly found in the healthy vagina. These researchers, according to article author Caroline Rea, RN, BS, MS, may find that these lactobacilli are effective in fighting bacterial vaginosis.

Echinacea

Echinacea in its tincture form works to improve immune function. Adding echinacea to a beverage one to three times daily can help to reduce the incidence of vaginosis. The usual dosage is one teaspoon or 5 ml (milliliters) three or more times a day when you are suffering from any type of infection. Echinacea has also been mentioned as a tea in connection with barberry and goldenseal to treat bacterial vaginosis. These three plants (herbs) have been found to contain antibacterial properties in the test tube, but their effectiveness has never been tested for vaginal infection in humans. You can douche with one of these preparations two times a day. Just use one to two tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) of one of the herbs per pint of water. Douching with one to two pints (500 to 1,000 ml) is sufficient for each session.

Tea Tree Oil and Vitamin E Suppositories

You can use a topical application of tea tree oil (this must be diluted) to cure your bacterial vaginosis. Diluted tea tree oil has been found to be effective in curing candida albicans (yeast infection), trichomonas and other yeast infections. (If you choose to use tea tree oil as a topical application, you must do so only under the supervision of your doctor). Some doctors mix tea tree oil with vitamin E and use it in suppository form to treat their patients' vaginal infections. The tea tree oil and vitamin E can also be used to soak a tampon, which you then insert into your vagina to treat your infection.
