Vitamin D3 is absorbed by the body from natural sunlight.
Vitamin D3, also called cholecalciferol, is a form of vitamin D that is manufactured in the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight. It is also found in certain types of foods such as cold water fish, cod liver oil and egg yolks. Vitamin D3 assists with the absorption of calcium in the body.
Bone Health
We all need calcium to keep our bones strong and healthy. In order for our bodies to digest and absorb calcium and allow it to work, a sufficient amount of vitamin D3 is needed. Vitamin D3 works with calcium to strengthen bones in the body. This vitamin also works with phosphorus, allowing it to be absorbed in the body as well. According to the iHealth Healthcare Information Directory, people who acquire a sufficient amount of vitamin D3 have stronger bones. It also appears that this vitamin significantly helps to prevent bone fractures. People who do not get enough calcium are likely to get osteoporosis, which is more prevalent in women than men.
Depression
People suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) struggle with depression in the fall and winter months, the months when they are not exposed to much sunlight. This depression is likely caused by a lack of vitamin D3. The most effective treatment for this disorder is sunlight, or a sunlight alternative. Bright light therapy, which uses artificial bright light, is the most common alternative. For most people, 15 to 20 minutes of sunlight is enough to receive adequate vitamin D3 to avoid depression.
Blood Pressure
Many clinical trials and retrospective studies have been conducted regarding vitamin D3 and blood pressure. According to the American Heart Association, vitamin D3 has been linked to lowering blood pressure. Studies have found that people with low levels of vitamin D3 have higher blood pressure and also higher LDL cholesterol. The studies did not conclude whether lower blood pressure was the result of people getting enough vitamin D3 or enough calcium.
