Grow Long African American Hair With Vitamins

If life's commitments make eating a balanced meal difficult, use vitamins.

1. Take a vitamin A supplement at a dosage of 5,000 to 10,000 IU per day. Vitamin A prevents free radicals from damaging the hair, as well as, keeping the hair hydrated. Exceeding a dosage of 50,000 IU can result in hair loss.


2. Take a vitamin E supplement dosed at 50 to 400 IU per day. According to Huntington College of Health Sciences, vitamin E assumes the role of an antioxidant and maintains hair follicles, which contribute to healthy hair and skin.


3. Purchase a B-Complex supplement. Read the supplement facts to make sure vitamin B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacinamide) and B5 (pantothenic acid) have a minimum dosage of 25 micrograms. The recommended dosage for folic acid is 400 to 800 mcg. Each vitamin nourishes the hair, and folic acid helps the hair grow. Alternatively, purchase each vitamin separately.


4. Purchase a biotin supplement. Take a daily dosage of 500 to 1000 mcg. Biotin metabolizes major food groups allowing the hair to become nourished. According to Harvard University, specialists consider biotin to be an important nutrient in maintaining the hair's strength, texture and function.
