Nutritional Facts Redline Energy Drink

Nutritional Facts About Redline Energy Drink

According to its website, Redline is a controversial energy drink developed by VPX Sports. It is designed to make the consumer lose weight through the "shivering method." VPX says that the drink plays off of the fact that the human body releases a large amount of stored body fat when a person is shivering. This shivering brings the body temperature back to normal, but proponents say that it is also an effective way to lose weight. Before you buy it, consider these nutritional facts about the Redline energy drink and if it is healthy or even safe for you.

Warnings

VPX has some words of warning for those who want to drink their fat-burning drink. They say that a tolerance needs to be built up prior to drinking an entire can a day. They advise to always begin use with half of a can, or 4 ounces, of Redline daily to assess tolerance. They also ask that consumers never exceed more than two cans daily or more than one can in a four-hour period. Always have something to eat with your Redline. If you drink it on an empty stomach, VPX says that it may cause nausea.

Nutritional Facts

The VPX website provides partial nutritional facts on each of the five Redline drinks offered. For each of the flavors (Peach Mango, Triple Berry, Grape, Mandarin-Orange and Green Apple), the company says that there are absolutely zero calories in the drink. The Peach Mango, Triple Berry and Mandarin-Orange each have 200 percent of your daily value of Vitamin C for every 4 ounces of Redline drink, while Grape and Green Apple have 125 percent of your daily value of Vitamin C for every 4 ounces of Redline drink. The website further says that there are no carbohydrates in any drink, no sugar and no saturated or unsaturated fats. There are nearly a dozen supplemental ingredients listed on each flavor, but the values are not given. Ingredients such as 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan and Vinpocetine are listed, but without the amount contained.

Harmful Supplements

Many of these supplements---for which VPX does not list the nutritional values---have been deemed as harmful by the Food and Drug Administration. In a 2001 study, the FDA says it has been trying to limit the amount of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan on the market because it has been proven to be prone to impurities in food and drink and was a leading contributor to the 1989 epidemic outbreak of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) in the United States. Another supplement, Yohimbine HCI, is potentially dangerous. According to DrugStore.com, it has been proven to be a contributor to the problems of high blood pressure, intestinal problems, liver and kidney deficiencies and heart problems.

Vinpocetine

Vinpocetine, another ingredient prevalent in all Redline drinks, has been proven to cause intestinal upset and rapid heartbeat. According to PDRHealth.com, side effects from consuming Vinpocetine include breathing problems, chest pains, blood vessel constriction and skin hives, rashes and itchy or swollen skin. You can also experience upset stomachs and headaches, facial flushing and a rapid increase or decrease in blood pressure. This is probably why the Redline can warns that only those over the age of 18 should drink Redline.

Caffeine Anhydrous

Another supplement found in all five Redline drinks is Caffeine Anhydrous, one of the purest forms of caffeine. Anhydrous simply means "without water." Developed in the early 19th century, Caffeine Anhydrous is a condensed form of caffeine that packs in three or four times the amount of caffeine as normal. While caffeine acts as a appetite suppressant (which is probably the reason for adding it to the Redline fat-burning drink) too much caffeine can cause dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea and chest pains.
