Types Of Gummy Candy

The traditional gummy bear

Gummy candy became popular in the U.S. in the form of gummy bears when Haribo introduced the candy to the American market. Although the exact recipe of the bears remains a secret, there are currently dozens of companies who manufacture a multitude of variations on the traditional bear form. The types vary by shape, size, animal, taste and color.

Gummy Bears

The traditional form of the gelatin-based candy is in the form of a small bear approximately 2 centimeters long. The sugary sweet has a mild taste and usually comes in a package in an assortment of five flavors: raspberry (red), orange (orange), strawberry (green), pineapple (colorless), and lemon (yellow).

Animals

The most typical variation of gummy candy, apart from the bears, is some type of animal. Gummy worms became very popular during the 1980s and nearly every common animal has been made into gummy form since then. Gummy animals include worms, fish, frogs, snakes, sharks, penguins, hippos, lobsters and spiders.

Fruits

Another popular type of gummy candy are the ones made into forms and tastes of various fruits. These include peach, watermelon and apples.

Sour

One of the most popular variations on the traditional taste of gummy candy is done by coating it with a layer of sour candy. These candy pieces come in many of the same forms. One of the most well-known products is Sour Patch Kids.

Healthy Candy

There are many forms of gummy candy that have attempted to address normal health concerns about food. These include organic gummy candy, sugar-free gummy candy, kosher gummy candy and vitamin-added gummy candy.

Novelty Gummy Candy

In manufacturers' attempt to get consumers' attention, there have been many novelty-type gummy candies introduced. These include flying insects, "walking with Jesus" candies in the shape of flip-flops and ear wax gummy candies. There's even a giant, bleeding heart gummy that "bleeds" when you bite into it.
