Start Taking Care Of Yourself Again

Initiate a process of daily self-care.

Self-care is often compromised as the demands of job, family, home life and social engagements take precedence. When you were younger, for example, you may not have had as many responsibilities to tend to and could easily schedule and afford outlets for rest and relaxation. With pressing economic concerns, caregiver duties and overtime at work, you may have sacrificed your own holistic needs. By following minimal steps every day, you can regain a sense of motivation to start taking care of yourself again.

Instructions

1. Take care of your physical health by scheduling a yearly wellness exam, dental cleaning and eye appointment. Take a daily vitamin, floss or use your retainer if needed. Walk outside for 15 minutes a day and breathe in the fresh air. Eat a portion of your favorite fruit or vegetable. Create a serene space in your bedroom for optimal rest.

2. Pay attention to your mental and emotional health by incorporating daily inspirational messages, affirmations and humorous comics into your morning routine. Allow yourself to let go of past hurts or anger, and shift your attitude from victim-consciousness to one that empowers you to heal your life. Learn about a hobby or passion that interests you. Release built-up tension by soaking in a sea salt bath or asking a loved one for a mini-massage.

3. Admit to yourself your own personal religious or spiritual views and follow a healthy path that resonates with your beliefs. Discover your life purpose, reconnect with your higher power, and use techniques such as prayer, meditation, yoga and journaling to find your center of peace. Express gratitude for what you already have in life.

4. Balance your checkbook, create a monthly budget and delegate a weekly or monthly portion of your income to a personal self-care savings account. Only buy what you need and what you can honestly afford. Be cautious loaning money to others who are unreliable or not trustworthy.

5. Decline social invitations if you are overbooked and attending would increase stress in your life. Strengthen your self-esteem and confidence by wearing well-fitted, classic outfits and maintaining proper hygiene. Surround yourself with friends and family members who are healthy, positive and encouraging.
