Supplements For Eye Health & Degeneration

A variety of supplements is available to maintain eye health and to improve the symptoms of certain degenerative eye diseases. In the case of degenerative eye diseases, different supplement formulas are used to treat specific conditions.

Prevention

Vitamin A belongs to a group of compounds that play a vital role in eye health. By promoting a healthy surface lining of the eyes, vitamin A prevents these linings from breaking down and allowing bacteria to enter.

Macular Degeneration

A large study known as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study has shown that a combination of certain vitamins and minerals may slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration. This combination is made up of vitamins C and E, beta carotene, and zinc.

Retinopathy

Retinopathy is a degenerative eye disease that is the leading cause of blindness in the U.S. For mild cases, supplements containing bilberry may be helpful; supplements with both bilberry and carotenoids may be more effective.

Cataracts

Cataracts form as a result of a mineral imbalance within the lens of your eye. For protection against the onset of cataracts, the recommended supplements are inositol, pantothenic acid, beta-carotene and vitamins E and C.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is caused by the degeneration of the optic nerve. To reduce the intraocular pressure and improve glaucoma, the recommended supplements are flaxseed oil, bilberry with bioflavonoids, chromium and vitamin C.
