50s Party Ideas & Floral Arrangements
The right theme and decorations for a 1950s party are the makings of a successful event. Post-war American teens were the queens and kings of the time. Their fashions and tastes in music set the scene for future generations. When planning a party celebrating this time, watch a few movies from the period to get an idea what Hollywood had in mind for the coming-of-age generation.
At the Hop
One of the trends of the 1950s was the sock hop. These dances typically took place in high school gyms, where teens had to take off their shoes so they wouldn't streak the floor. The bobby soxers, or trendy girls of the time, wore white, turned-down socks as they danced the night away. Throw your own sock hop for a 1950s theme party. Ask your guests to dress the part. Men should wear loose-fitting, cuffed trousers or jeans with letterman sweaters or white T-shirts. women should choose poodle or plaid skirts or capri pants, along with cardigans or collared shirts. Play Danny and the Juniors, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and Bill Haley and the Comets.
White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation
The songs of the 1950s resonated with the teens who selected them on the jukebox and bought them at the record store. Among the hits were Marty Robbins' "A White Sport Coat." The lyrics tell of a young man whose date stands him up for the dance. He's wearing a white sport coat with a pink carnation but is in a blue, blue mood. Use the lyrics to create a centerpiece for a 1950s party. Lay a white suit or sport coat on the table, buttoned up. In the center of the jacket, place a vase filled with pink carnations. Place small blue flowers around the base of the vase and scattered on the jacket. See how many of the guests get the reference.
Blue Suede Shoes
Before being drafted to serve in the military, Elvis Presley rose to fame in the 1950s. His songs were played on the radio and boys imitated his look while girls swooned. One of Elvis' hit songs was "Blue Suede Shoes." Although the song had been written and previously recorded by Carl Perkins, Elvis made it big. Use this song as a theme for a centerpiece at a 1950s party. Find a pair of the shoes, or dye plain white suede shoes blue. Place a floral ball inside each shoe and fill with blue or other colored flowers.
