Treat Anxiety With Yoga

Relieve symptoms of anxiety with yoga.

Anxiety is a mental health condition that can cause feelings of panic or shortness of breath. There are several diagnosable categories of anxiety, but treating anxiety with an alternative healing method, such as yoga, may be effective, according to B.K.S. Iyengar, author of "Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health." Yoga can calm the nervous system, ease the mind and lower your heart rate -- all beneficial when dealing with anxiety. As with any new exercise routine, consult your doctor first.

Instructions

Legs Up the Wall Pose

1. Sit near a wall in a position with your knees bent and the soles of your feet on the floor. Place your right hip against the wall, keeping your knees bent.

2. Swivel your body until your legs are pressed straight up against the wall and your upper body is laying on the floor. Rest your head on a pillow.

3. Hold this position for five minutes. Rotate your ankles clockwise a few times, then counterclockwise a few times to relieve any tingling in your legs.

4. Hold the pose for another five minutes, then hug your knees into your chest. Roll to the right side and stay there for a few moments.

5. Rise back up gently to a seated position from the side position.
