Vitamin Supplements For Weight Loss & Diabetes

People increasingly are in search of tips on lose weight these days, especially in the United States, where obesity is on the rise. Maintaining a healthy weight is especially important for people with diabetes. While many people know about the diet and exercise recommendations for weight loss, many aren't aware that vitamin supplements can also help them to trim down and combat diabetes.

Vitamins

Many people with diabetes do not metabolize vitamin C very well. As a result, diabetics will often benefit from taking a vitamin C supplement. Mineral ascorbates work better than ascorbic acid. The recommended dosage is between 500 mg and 1,500 mg per day, according to Michael Murray, N.D. a naturopathic physician. In fact, according to research in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, "Regularly consuming 500 milligrams or more of vitamin C may help you burn 30 percent more fat while working out."

A dose of 30 mg to 90 mg of vitamin B6 and/or 1,000 mcg of vitamin B12 every day could help prevent neuropathy, a condition all diabetics need to avoid. In fact, taking a multi-B vitamin has been known to improve energy levels for diabetes and non-diabetics alike. Having more energy means you are more likely to be active and burn more calories. In addition, Vitamin D can protect diabetics from getting cataracts and may even reduce their resistance to insulin. People with diabetes also need more Vitamin E, a helpful antioxidant, than the average person.

Other Helpful Supplements

Besides the additional vitamin requirements for diabetics, supplements are also important. For instance, diabetics have an increased need for magnesium. They can also benefit from taking conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and coenzyme Q10.

According to Murray, chromium is good for diabetics because when the body lacks this particular chemical element, it can increase insensitivity to insulin. Take 200 mcg to 400 mcg per day.

Alpha lipoic acid can help balance blood sugar and reduce the risk diabetics run of damaging peripheral nerves. Take 10 mg to 100 mg of zinc every day to improve insulin action. Diabetics should also consider taking digestive enzymes to assist with the absorption of nutrients from the food they eat and the other supplements they take, Murray adds.

Cautions

Before taking any type of nutritional supplement, consult your physician to make sure that what you plan to take will not conflict with any medications you take.

You also need to be aware that some supplements may contain additives that could be detrimental to your health. Check the labels carefully and make sure the manufacturer is compliant with pharmaceutical GMP guidelines.
