Second only to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most-commonly diagnosed cancer for women in the United States. More than one in four cancers are breast cancer, and the breast cancer rate for U.S. women is 13 percent, or one in eight. While researchers battle over the exact details of a cancer-preventing lifestyle, there are vitamins associated with the disease which may offset the risks.








The Role of Vitamin C


Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are harmful molecules in the body that steal electrons from healthy molecules, damaging a cell's membrane as well as genetic material. Vitamin C saves cells by offering free radicals their own electrons, and offers a protective effect against breast cancer.


According to the Nurses' Health Study, premenopausal women with a family history of breast cancer who added slightly over 200 mg of vitamin C a day to their diet had a 63 percent reduced risk of breast cancer than women who ingested 70 mg daily. The research indicated that while vitamin E may protect against environmentally induced breast cancer, it has far more benefits in reducing genetic-predisposed breast cancer. In the study, premenopausal women with a family history of breast cancer who consumed higher doses of vitamin E had a 43 percent reduced risk of developing breast cancer compared to a smaller 16 percent risk reduction for women who did not have a family history of breast cancer.


Vitamin D Defense


Women with vitamin D deficiencies have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. The vitamin appears to stimulate a protein that reduces the growth of breast cancer cells. According to the Journal of Biological Chemistry, women with vitamin D levels exceeding 53 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml) have a 50 percent reduction in developing breast cancer as women with level of 13 ng/ml.


Beta-carotene for the Breast


Beta-carotene, the yellow pigment found in fruits and vegetables, is a powerful antioxidant similar to vitamins C and E. According to the Department of Biochemistry at Tufts University School of Medicine, large doses of beta-carotene can decrease cancerous tumors. Just by eating one-third of a carrot daily, postmenopausal women can reduce their risk of breast cancer by 50 percent.


Dosages


The Cancer Treatment Center of America recommends not taking vitamin C if you are prone to kidney stones. Otherwise, 250 to 1,000 mg is recommended, taken in divided doses of two or three times a day.


Overloading on vitamin D can be toxic, so do not take more than 600 international units (IU) daily unless prescribed by your physician.


Vitamin E recommendations indicate 400 IU daily. Consult your physician if you take blood thinners.


Beta-carotene can be taken in daily amounts of 10,000 to 25,000 IU.

VPX has some words of warning for those who want to drink their fat-burning drink. They say that a tolerance needs to be built up prior to drinking an entire can a day. They advise to always begin use with half of a can, or 4 ounces, of Redline daily to assess tolerance. They also ask that consumers never exceed more than two cans daily or more than one can in a four-hour period. Always have something to eat with your Redline. Harmful Supplements


Many of these supplements---for which VPX does not list the nutritional values---have been deemed as harmful by the Food and Drug Administration. In a 2001 study, the FDA says it has been trying to limit the amount of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan on the market because it has been proven to be prone to impurities in food and drink and was a leading contributor to the 1989 epidemic outbreak of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) in the United States. Water Standards for Commercial Poultry


Assuring adequate water quantity and quality is a key concern for commercial poultry farms. Among other things, poor water quality can negatively impact a bird's weight, increase its mortality or impair the quality of its eggs. Proper testing is necessary to assure healthy birds and bird products.


Testing


Water quality can be tested using a number of different methods. Among other tings, samples may be tested for bacteria, for levels of naturally occurring minerals, for pollutants, or for other chemical and physical factors such as hardness and pH. Complicating matters, some seemingly innocent elements can be deadly if they accumulate or when they're found in combination.


Possible Contaminants


Bacteria is a common water contaminant. It's presence is often the result of surface runoff from nearby areas, which can carry things like fecal matter into the water source. Runoff can also bring contaminants like pesticides, herbicides and petroleum products into the water. Possible mineral contaminants include nitrogen, calcium, chloride, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, sodium, sulfate and zinc. Although many of these are naturally occurring and harmless in small quantities, they can be harmful if they exist in combination with other elements.


Standards


Each potential contaminant has been given a maximum acceptable level. For total bacteria, this level is 100 parts per ml. Coliform bacteria should not exceed 50 parts per ml. The maximum levels for other contaminants are listed below:


Nitrate: 25 mg/l


Nitrite: 4 mg/l


Chloride: 250 mg/l (If sodium levels are high, chloride levels as low as 14 mg/l could be problematic)


Copper: 0.6 mg/l


Iron: 0.3 mg/l


Lead: 0.02 mg/l


Magnesium: 125 mg/l (If sulfate levels are high, levels should not exceed 50 mg/l)


Sulfate: 250 mg/l (If magnesium or chloride levels are high, levels shouldn't exceed 50 mg/l)


Zinc: 1.5 mg/l


Although sodium is not given a parameter, levels above 50 mg/l could be harmful if sulfate or chloride content is high.


Other Factors








Aside from contaminants, it is also useful to monitor water for pH levels and to avoid excessive turbidity. An ideal pH is between 6.0 and 6.8, although a range between four and eight is acceptable.


Sampling


Routine sampling of water should be conducted. Your local county extension agency can usually direct you in how best to do this. You can also take samples yourself and send them to a lab for a fee. If you collect your own, be sure to let the water run for a few minutes first so that you obtain a fresh sample. Place the sample in a sterile container and be sure it arrives at the lab within 24 hours.


Maintenance


Changing water filters and flushing water lines regularly can go a long way towards maintaining good quality water. If testing reveals problems, you may need to treat the water chemically. Consult your county extension agency for guidance.

Tea

Pink grapefruit and lemon are citrus fruits that relieve bloating. These fruits cause the cells to let go of excess water. Plus, they are extremely low in sodium. Try incorporating these fruits into your diet.








Supplement your diet with calcium. Do this by drinking low-fat milk or snacking on cottage cheese. You can also take a calcium pill. Calcium not only reduces water retention but has numerous other health benefits, such as strengthening bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.


Stay Away From Salt








Yes, we all need salt to survive. Too much can be extremely detrimental to the body. One of the major causes of fluid retention and the need for water pills is excess sodium. Avoid overly processed foods, which often contain salt; read labels to make sure you are not consuming too much, and use only a sprinkle in your cooking. Leafy greens are an excellent source of B vitamins.

Calories


Vitamin water averages around 50 calories for an 8-ounce serving while energy drinks, unless specifically sugar-free, usually contain at least double that amount.


Vitamins


Vitamin water contains vitamins, of course, and so do most energy drinks. Some energy drinks have nearly the same amount of vitamins as the vitamin water selections.


Caffeine


Some vitamin water may be caffeine-free, but others still contain caffeine. Energy drinks are known for their caffeine kick and may contain other stimulants, such as guarana, also known as "herbal caffeine."


Other ingredients








Vitamin water often includes artificial or alternative sweeteners. Energy drinks are often packed with sodium along with ginseng, ginkgo biloba and other ingredients that are said to, but not proven to, enhance energy and alertness.


Warning


Drinking excessive amounts of either beverage can be detrimental. Taking in too many vitamins can impede the body from absorbing other nutrients; taking in too much caffeine can leave you jittery and nervous.
