Yeast infections are caused by an overproduction of yeast in your system, which often happens when you take antibiotics. Some people are more prone to developing yeast problems when taking this medication. Yeast can cause symptoms in various areas of the body, such as the neck, vagina, rectum and even the tongue and lips. It can cause itching, burning, discharge (in the case of vaginal yeast) and physical manifestations that can resemble rashes. There are several different ways that you can fight yeast infections due to antibiotics.


Yogurt


The best (and most simple) way to get rid of a yeast infection that is caused by antibiotics is to eat yogurt---at least one cup a day while you are taking the antibiotics. You can find acidophilus pills in your local drugstore or vitamin shop. These act in the same way yogurt does to reduce yeast caused by antibiotics. Your doctor will most likely recommend that you take these pills while on the antibiotic treatment if you don't like yogurt. Sometimes the pills can be taken in the same way that suppositories are used to fight yeast infections. However, while acidophilus is considered to be fairly harmless, you should always consult your doctor before using any health product in a way that differs from what the instructions say.


Creams








There are over-the-counter anti-fungal creams, ointments and gels that allow you to fight a yeast infection through direct contact with the skin. These include tioconazole, clotrimazole, miconazole and butoconazole creams (all generic names for brand name products). All of these products need to be applied to the skin during treatment---not internally. Some of these creams work in as soon as 3 days after treatment, while others could take up to 7 days. They are best used if you only have to take the antibiotics for a short period of time.


Suppositories


Another way to fight vaginal yeast infections is with over-the-counter anti-fungal suppositories. These are compact oval tablets that are inserted into the vagina to rid it of bad bacteria and yeast. Many suppositories are natural or homeopathic. Again, this is a temporary solution while on the antibiotics. You should insert these each day that you are on the treatment.


Reduce Yeast Intake


Since yeast infections are caused by too much yeast thriving in the body, you should stop eating and drinking foods that are high in yeast content while on the antibiotics. This includes beer and other types of alcohol, breads, mushrooms and cheese.


Consult your doctor to see if there is an antibiotic medication that you can switch to that will work better with your system to reduce yeast infections.

I was lucky enough to host my parents every summer for 12 years. Now, I have my darling Mom with me full time.


Inviting senior citizens into your home requires a lot of thought and preparation. It is as important to make your house safe for the senior citizens as it is to make your home welcoming. Follow the tips in this eHow article to help ease the transition.








Instructions


1. If you're lucky enough to have disposable income, think about items in your home that can be updated for ease of use by the senior citizens. A refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom puts meals and snacks at eye level so there's no stooping over. Also, arrange the contents of the refrigerator so that the items most used by your seniors (such as Ensure meal supplements) are at their eye level and in front of other items. Clear counters of breakable items and stock up on paper plates and good quality plastic plates and drinking cups to help alleviate the worry of dropped glass. Paper plates are also wonderful for the microwave. If necessary, rearrange your cabinets so that place settings are located on a lower shelf, easily within reach of your senior citizens.








2. If your senior citizens are lucky enough to be fully mobile, they're ahead of the curve! However, you might need to consider putting in a stair lift or elevator to assist in helping the senior citizens reach other floors in the house. Consider putting in the new high rise toilets to alleviate pain in the knees - these are, in my opinion, much preferable to those removable riser toilet seats (these are nasty to clean...).


3. If you have throw rugs lying around, tack down all edges with either carpet tacks or the double sided tape made exactly for this purpose to keep your senior citizens upright! In my house, we had a toss up between the multitude of throw rugs needed for the comfort of my 3-legged dog and the sparsity of throw rugs needed for my Mom (Mom won). A new recliner might ease the transition, but you might want to take your senior citizen with you to pick it out. My mom has shrunk so much that she needed a petite chair as all others were too deep for her.


4. Once my Mom moved in full time and I determined her needs, I then went out and shopped for items to assist her on a daily basis. I noticed that she wasn't drinking much water so I bought a small water bottle and asked her to finish it daily. I also bought one of the 7 day pill dispensers (the kind that you set up with breakfast/lunch/dinner pills) and I fill this weekly for her. I reorder her medications when they get low and, by using the 7 day pill dispenser, I have plenty of time to reorder and pick up reinforcements.


5. Train any animals present to respect foot space. I did this by swinging my legs widely when the animals approached or holding a cane and swinging it lightly, side to side. They learned quickly to steer clear of feet so I don't particularly worry about them tripping my Mom.


6. Give your senior citizens as much autonomy as possible. Allow them to do the things that they still can do, such as making the bed. Avoid smothering them (even though they are so cute!). As my Mom's mobility waned, I found other ways to let her feel as though she's still in control. I ask advice daily (yes, I have an exceptionally fantastic Mother) and, as her world has become smaller due to mobility issues, I've invited the world in. I rotate friends in for dinners and have made it clear that the door is always open. There's many times I've come home to find a friend sitting and chatting with Gert.


7. Treasure the times you have with your senior citizen. I'm so lucky in that I've gotten to relate to my Mother and Father on an adult level. After Dad died, Mom and I continued a wonderful relationship. Also, don't expect that, just because your love one is a senior citizen (or elderly) that they're 'old.' My Mom, at 92, is more viable than most people I know. She says that she feels about 45 inside, it's just her body that has aged. The elderly still have feelings, they still have a lot to offer and, in my humble opinion, they have more wisdom than I will ever hope to have.

Vitamin B6


For over three decades, claims have been made that vitamin B6 improves the symptoms of individuals with autism. Numerous studies have examined the link between B6 and autism. For example, a 2002 study led by Shigehisa Kuriyama found that a group of autistic individuals given 100 mg of vitamin B6 once a day for two weeks experienced improved language ability as compared to their counterparts who were given a placebo. Other studies have, however, concluded that vitamin B6 does not improve symptoms of autism, and as of 2009, most researchers agree that there is not sufficient evidence to conclude that B6 improves symptoms of autism. Foods that are rich in vitamin B6 include cereal grains, carrots, spinach, peas, potatoes, milk, cheese, eggs, fish, liver and flour.


Vitamin C








Many researchers believe that vitamin C can regulate dopamine and thus inhibit many of the problematic behaviors associated with autism, including repetitive movements. A 1993 study published in the journal, Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry, found that Vitamin C caused a significant reduction in sensorimotor symptoms in autistic individuals. While preliminary evidence suggests that a diet rich in vitamin C can improve some symptoms associated with autism, research is still relatively scarce.

Avoid Iron Depleting Foods

Everyone knows that we need an iron-rich diet because iron is an important element to our health. However, not all of understand how important iron is during the various stages of our lives. Since iron content varies according to age, sex, and diet, as well as our current health status, it is important to know how much iron we need as well as ways to make certain that we reach our iron needs. One obvious way of helping make certain that we have sufficient iron is to eat foods that are rich in iron. Another way is to avoid food items and other sources that help to deplete our iron reserves. But which foods do we need to avoid and how do we go about achieving that goal?


Instructions








1. Identify those foods that actually deplete or inhibit iron intake. These include foods and drinks high in caffeine like soft drinks and certain types of chocolate. It also includes foods and drinks containing phosphates, which are found in many soft drinks, fizzy lemonades, certain types of candy and ice cream, some condiments, a lot or processed meats. Other foods that can deplete iron intake include certain types of grain cereals that are not specifically fortified with iron, especially wheat and multi-grains and their related by-products. Some beans and/or legumes, like those containing polyphenols and/or phytates also fall into this category as do certain nuts and seeds and related by-products like peanut butter. Too much calcium also inhibits iron intake, which means that it is important not to overdo products like milk and cheese. Drinks like tea, coffee, grape juice and red wine containing polyphenolic compounds can also inhibit iron intake as can some spices such as oregano. Certain foods high in peptides, like soy and soy products also fall into this category.


2. Identify other every day ingredients taken by mouth that also deplete iron intake. These include certain medications like aspirin and antacids.


3. Avoid soft drinks that have caffeine in favor of caffeine-free drinks like all natural lemon and lime 7-Up, Sprite, Sierra Mist or colas that have been decaffeinated. Better yet, switch to a natural fruit juice (other than grape) or flavored waters.Before purchasing chocolate in any form, read the label to determine how much caffeine is involved. Overall, white chocolate contains less caffeine than milk chocolate. The deeper in color the chocolate, the more caffeine that is likely to be involved. Therefore, if you just must have a piece of chocolate, look for white or creamy milk chocolate instead of semi-sweet or bittersweet dark flavors.


4. Avoid foods and drinks containing phosphates. These are typically found in many soft drinks (particularly colas) and fizzy juice drinks like certain types of lemonade. Certain syrupy fruit cordials also contain phosphates. Watch labels of products that you purchase within this category, looking for those lower in phosphates, or switch to a different type of drink like phosphate free flavored waters or certain types of juices.Some sugar driven products, such as certain types of candy like lollipops and even certain chocolate bars are also high in phosphates. Ice cream unfortunately also falls into this category. Most bakery or grocery made desserts tend to be high in phosphates because of the high amounts of baking powder and self-rising flour used within these products. Read labels to avoid those products that contain high amounts of phosphates in favor of those with lower quantities.Many condiments like ketchup and mayonnaise are high in phosphates as well. Check labels for those products that have specifically removed or reduced phosphate levels. A lot or processed meats like hot dogs, fish fingers and even certain kinds of pizza may also contain high amounts of phosphates. When possible, avoid processed meats altogether.


5. Look for iron-fortified cereals, particularly those made from wheat, whole grains, or brans to off-set the iron depletion capability of those food items.


6. Look for alternative foods to legumes that deplete or lower amounts of iron intake. Do the same with nuts and seeds. There are alternative products within the same categories that do not effect iron levels.


7. Avoid excessive calcium intake. Look for alternative milk and cheese products that will not inhibit or deplete calcium intake.


8. Stay away from drinks like tea, coffee, grape juice and red wine containing polyphenolic compounds. These can also inhibit iron intake. Look for all natural teas, switch to other fruit juices, and try rose or white whites instead or look for alternative drinks that do not contain polyphenolic compounds.


9. Avoid foods that are high in peptides, like soy and soy products. Look for alternative food options instead.


10. Switch spices, like oregano, that inhibit iron intake for others that do not.


11. Be cautious with medications like aspirin and antacids. They can inhibit iron intake as well as deplete iron reserves. Switch to alternative medicines like Tylenol and antacids that do not contain phosphates or other ingredients known to deplete iron reserves. Don't over-take vitamins that contain high amounts of calcium since it can also hurt iron reserves.

Beta carotene's contributions are twofold, healing a deficiency that may occur in liver damage and attacking free radicals that may cause liver damage in the first place. The liver uses low-density lipoproteins to remove fat fragments, but it cannot send out these fragments when there is a deficiency of choline. Lecithin supplementation, which raises blood choline levels, can take care of this problem. There is also speculation that B-vitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin D can help the liver when given in normal doses (See References 1 and 2).


Vitamins and Minerals to Limit


Since the liver processes all nutrients in the body, an abundance of any vitamin over the recommended amount has the potential of causing problems. Vitamin K in large doses may produce jaundice, a disease related to the liver. Sustained released vitamins that contain niacin have been said to be hepatoxic by researchers at VCU. Biotin may cause enlargement of the liver when taken in large amounts over long periods of time. Also, there are many herbs that can cause problems in the liver. If you have liver problems or are considering taking the following herbs, consult your doctor before using: black cohosh, chaparral, ma-huang, comfrey, greater celadine, germander, kava, pennyroyal, mistletoe, valerian and skullcap (See References 2 and 3).








Other Liver Tips


Avoid using alcohol to excess as it makes your liver overwork and can lead to great damage. Don't combine medications with alcohol of any kind. Try to stay away from environmental pollutants like aerosol sprays, paint thinner and bug sprays. Also, eat a healthy and balanced diet to ensure that your liver is not receiving too much or too little of anything at all (See Resource 1).

When it comes to party themes, it can be hard to follow through from decor to food. If the Flintstones are your theme this year, some simple tips can turn your ordinary party food into a Stone Age feast.


Brontosaurus burgers


Fred Flintstone didn't settle for just any slab of meat at a BBQ. When he wanted a burger he went straight for the prime meat.


To re-create this favorite, simply use ordinary hamburger (or turkey burger) meat and cut into shapes using dinosaur cookie cutters. Kids will love the fun shape. Another great idea is to let the kids design their own dinosaur using the bun and condiments.


Cookies and candy


Bones can be made easily using sugar cookie dough. Cut out the shapes and arrange on a plate. Add each child's name to one bone for a special touch.


Create a bowl of Sticks 'n Stones using white yogurt-covered raisins and small pretzel sticks. Mix them up in a bowl to create the effect.


Another cute treat can be rock candy. The stick can resemble a club similar to Bamm- Bamm's.


Fruity Pebble treats


Everyone's heard of Rice Krispie treats, but why not take a Flintstone spin on them and use Fruity Pebbles? These little treats are easy to make (all you need is cereal, butter, marshmallow) and are a great finger food. You can also use Cocoa Pebbles.


Finger foods


Cavemen loved meat and ate with their hands, and so should your party-goers. Remember how Fred's car tipped over with the rack of ribs? Meats like corn dogs (which also resemble clubs), hot dogs, ribs, and chicken wings are a great way to incorporate Stone Age eating into modern day parties.


The birthday cake


Sticking with the theme is most important when it comes to the cake. Choosing a main character like Dino or Fred may be easiest if you are making the cake at home. Otherwise, local bakeries have come a long way and can recreate the Flintstone house or car to your liking.

Tying the food into your Flintsone party theme should ultimately consist of easy-to-eat meats, finger foods and treats that bring the fun cartoon family to mind.

Use Vitamin Therapy For Crohn'S

Crohn's is a medical condition that inflames the GI tract. The swelling associated with Crohn's ranges from mild discomfort to extreme pain. The related irritation forces intestines to expel frequently; often in diarrhea form. Crohn's affects both sexes and spans all age groups, although it is more common in younger adults between the ages of 20 and 30. In recent years, studies have experimented with vitamin therapy as a means for treating Crohn's.


Instructions


1. Check with your physician before adding any additional vitamins to your daily intake. He may determine a high potency multivitamin will be sufficient or he may recommend one or more of the following.


2. Take between 800 and 1200 IU of vitamin D. Crohn's patients exhibit an inability to absorb sufficient quantities of vitamin D for bone development.


3. Increase calcium intake to around 1200 mg per day. Patients afflicted with Crohn's lose bone mass at quicker rates than their healthy counterparts. Therefore, increasing calcium intake can prove helpful.








4. Add at least 2.7 grams of omega-3 fatty acid fish oil to the daily diet. Studies show that increased intake of this supplement allows patients to lessen the effects of Crohn's episodes.


5. Inject between 25 and 50 mg of vitamin B-12 daily. Crohn's patients often do not take in sufficient quantities of B-12 and may require supplementation.


6. Increase iron intake as recommended by a physician if tests indicate blood iron deficiency. Low iron intake can result in anemia, which can cause problems for Crohn's patients.


7. Ascertain if selenium amounts need to be increased. Scientists believe selenium acts as a powerful antioxidant, which can be helpful in combating Crohn's disease.


8. Replace fish oil with flaxseed oil or add flaxseed to omega-3 intake to lengthen the time between Crohn's episodes.


9. Add between 25 and 50 mg of zinc to the diet each day. Zinc is required to repair damaged intestinal cells.


10. Determine if a vitamin K deficiency exists. Vitamin K is not well absorbed by Crohn's patients, which can be further exacerbated by the fact that the antibiotics used to treat the disease interfere with the body's ability to absorb vitamin K.
