Vitamin C deficiencies in guinea pigs are very serious.


Guinea pigs require certain amounts of vitamin C, and without it they develop a deficiency called scurvy. Vitamin C deficiency in guinea pigs can be very serious and cause many problems, so pigs that have the issue should be treated immediately by a veterinarian.


The Facts


According to Dr. Holly Nash of Doctors Foster and Smith, guinea pigs are different than other small mammals in their vitamin C requirements. Like humans, they lack an enzyme in their bodies that makes vitamin C and need to take supplements to provide the adequate amount. Guinea pig pellets contain vitamin C, but storage and light exposure can destroy it, which is why guinea pigs should always be feed supplements or vegetables that contain adequate amounts of the vitamin.


Symptoms


Symptoms of scurvy can present themselves in a guinea pig within weeks of being fed an inadequate diet. Dr. Dawn Ruben of PetPlace.com states that guinea pigs with vitamin C deficiencies can develop diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, a loss of appetite and a rough hair coat. In addition, symptoms of scurvy include discharge from the eyes or nose, swollen and painful joints and crying when being handled.


Diagnosis


According to Dr. Ruben, diagnosis of scurvy in a guinea pig can be rather difficult, as the symptoms are indicative of a variety of other illnesses. Joint issues are a common sign of scurvy and many vets treat guinea pigs with vitamin C if they have that problem.


Treatment


The vitamin C can either be added to the guinea pig's food or water, or in serious cases, given via injection. If the scurvy is treated early enough, the guinea pig typically makes a full recovery and is kept on a maintenance dose of the vitamin. Recovery from scurvy usually takes about one week.








Prevention


Feeding your guinea pig a diet that is rich in vitamin C is the easiest and most effective way to prevent scurvy. According to Dr. Nash, foods such as kale, broccoli, parsley, yellow and red peppers, and guava are excellent sources of vitamin C. Feed these types of veggies to your guinea pig, along with pellets that are formulated for them.

Coenzyme Q10 is an enzyme involved in energy production and present in all cell membranes. And although CoQ10 is present in many foods, our body require more as we grow older because we are unable to manufacturer enough to meet our needs. What Is CoQ10?

Tips For Plastic Syringes

Plastic syringes are a boon for people who must take injectable medications. But how do you use them properly? Better yet, how do you keep your loved ones or children protected from needle pricks, and dispose of the syringes properly? There are ways to do all of these in a safe and sensible manner.


Use a Plastic Syrings Properly


To use the syringe correctly, use a new needle every time. Remove the orange cap and the protective plastic cap on the end, and make sure the plunger is pushed all the way down to eliminate air bubbles. Insert the syringe into the bottle, and turn the bottle and syringe upside down, with the bottle on top. Carefully draw the fluid into the syringe, pulling back on the plunger slowly, until you have the correct amount. When you pull the needle out of the bottle, check again for air bubbles, which can result in your having less medication than planned. Clean off a fold of skin using soap and water or alcohol, and insert the needle into the fold at a 90-degree angle. This, surprisingly enough, should barely hurt at all. Slowly push the plunger down and withdraw the needle. You may need to wipe up any leakage of medicine, but it should only be a drop or two.


Protect from Accidental Pricks


Never leave uncapped syringes lying around. Once you have finished using your syringe, either place the cap back on or cut off the needle with a special needle cutter. This can be found at any pharmacy. Whichever option you choose, make sure you dispose of the needle properly (see below). If you have young children or pets, always put your syringes in a place where they cannot access the syringes.


Proper Disposal








Pharmacies will sell specially designed containers to hold syringes after use. These containers are usually red, with a clear top. When it is full, some have a long, plastic tab that locks into place to keep the container shut. The container may also have stickers on it that warn of biohazardous contents. They are not very expensive; a large version will hold many needles, depending on how many you use a day. Smaller versions of these are also available. If you are unable to find these containers, a bleach bottle will serve the same purpose. Place the used needles in the container of choice, and seal it (with the bleach bottle, you may need to duct tape the lid to the bottle). According to the EPA, you may then call your local waste facility, and ask for their policy on disposing of needles. Some may accept it, since it has been sealed shut, while others may not. In a worst-case scenario, bring the container with you and ask your doctor if he or she can help you dispose of them. They will be more than happy to do so.

Take Away Acne Scars







Acne scars are caused by the picking and poking of acne blemishes, which causes areas of damage on the surface of the skin. These embarrassing discolored areas can last for months after the acne has disappeared. Fortunately, there are a few ways that you can lighten and remove acne scarring and discoloration using household products.








Instructions


1. Exfoliate the skin with baking soda. Baking soda is a highly alkaline substance that will lift off dead skin cells quickly and effectively without a lot of hard scrubbing. When dead skin cells are removed, skin discolorations and scarring are reduced and eliminated quickly. Simply add 1 tsp. of water to 1 tbsp. of baking soda, and mix well. A paste will form which you will massage gently onto moistened skin for 20 seconds. After the skin has been adequately exfoliated, rinse well with water. You can use a baking soda scrub once a day to help remove acne scarring.


2. Tone the skin with lemon juice. Lemon juice contains high levels of Vitamin C, which act as a skin rejuvenator and promote new skin cell turnover. This will allow the skin to produce new skin cells more rapidly, aiding in creating a balanced, evenly toned complexion. Lemon juice can lighten the skin and will also help remove dead skin cells. To use lemon juice as a toner for acne scarring, pour concentrated lemon juice into a clean spray bottle, which is available at any supermarket. Spray the lemon juice onto the skin after the face has been washed. Let the lemon juice dry onto the skin. You can use lemon juice on the skin up to three times a day to treat scarring and discolorations.

Maple Valley Syrup Diet

The Maple Valley Syrup Diet is better known as the Master Cleanse or the Lemonade Diet. The founder of the Master Cleanse, Stanley Burroughs, wrote a book called "The Master Cleanser," outlining the diet and its benefits, naming it as a cure for all diseases. He specifically recommended the organic Maple Valley brand of maple syrup to use for this diet. It was also stated by Burroughs to have a detoxification effect along with a weight loss.


The Diet








The Master Cleanse is generally done for 10 days, and mainly consists of one lemonade drink made with maple syrup, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and water. It is a very strict regimen. Start each morning by drinking a quart of saltwater. The saltwater can be prepared by adding 2 tsp. of unionized sea salt to 1 qt. of warm water. Prepare it in a container with a lid; shake it until the salt is dissolved. This is supposed to act like an enema, helping to clear the colon and eliminate any waste. This elimination happens within an hour, so being near a bathroom is important.


For the remainder of the day, you can drink as much of the lemonade drink as you like. Drink one glass every hour or two for a total of six to 12 glasses each day. The drink contains 2 tbsp. of organic lemon or lime juice, 2 tbsp. of organic maple syrup, 1/10th tsp. of cayenne chili pepper, and a 10-oz. glass of hot or cold water. Combine all of the ingredients into a glass or jar and stir or shake vigorously.


In the evening, drink a laxative herbal tea to encourage the cleansing process. No other vitamins or supplements should be taken while on the diet, but Burroughs recommends a visit to your doctor before beginning the diet, especially if you are taking prescription medication.

What is Hypersomnia?

Types of Hypersomnia

This is caused by a dysfunction of the hypothalamus. Idiopathic means unexplained or unwarranted, meaning that the exact cause of the hypersomnia is unknown. Post-traumatic hypersomnia is a result of emotional trauma or damage to the central nervous system. Normal hypersomnia is this extended sleep pattern passed on genetically.


What are some of the symptoms?


There are a number of symptoms that are sure signs of a sleep condition, most especially, the inability to operate without sporadic naps throughout the day. Other symptoms include having a hard time waking up, anxiety in social situations, irritability throughout the day and extreme fatigue. In more dire situations, symptoms can include both audio and visual hallucinations, loss of appetite from inactivity, memory loss and improper sense perception.


Treatment

Most physicians will prescribe antibiotics to treat your bladder infection, but there are also some home remedies for mild cases. What is a Bladder Infection


A bladder infection is an inflammation of your body's urine producing system. Bladder infections affect your urinary system, including your kidneys, bladder and urethra. Symptoms


Painful urination is the number one symptom of a bladder infection. You may feel a sharp, intense pain when you try to urinate. You may also experience a burning sensation in your urethra or bladder as you urinate. Other symptoms of a bladder infection may include either an increased need to urinate or a sudden difficulty urinating. Bloody, cloudy or smelly urine are also indicators that there is a problem in your urinary system. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your physician immediately for a diagnosis.


Prescription Treatment








Most physicians will treat a bladder infection with a course of antibiotics. Bactrim, Ciprofloxacin or Augmentin are generally prescribed for simple, uncomplicated infectons. Bladder infections with obstructions are more complicated and may be treated with Ampicillin, Imipenem or Piperacillin-tazobactam. Depending on the severity of the infection and the brand of antibiotics, your physician will prescribe your medication for anywhere from one day to two weeks. Men don't usually respond well to the short-term treatments, so they are generally prescribed long-term antibiotics.


It should be noted that you will start to feel better within a few days of treatment. When that happens, patients are often tempted to stop taking the antibiotics, but you should always finish the entire prescription. Your symptoms may be gone but the bacteria may still be present and you need to finish the antibiotics to completely remove them from your body. Always consult your physician before taking any prescription medication and follow the instructions exactly.


Home Remedies


Vitamin C can play an important role in your recovery from a bladder infection. Many physicians believe that increasing the acidity of your urine will kill the bacteria in your urinary system. Some suggest taking vitamin C supplements to achieve this. The supplements are a better source of the vitamin C than oranges or orange juice because of the way the body metabolizes them. At least 1000 milligrams of vitamin C daily is suggested to help fight off an infection.


You can also speed up your recovery from bladder infections by drinking lots of water to flush the bacteria from your urinary tract. 5. Use an omega-3 fatty acid to lower your cholesterol. The best way to get omega-3 fatty acid is to eat cold-water fish, but supplements on the market today contain this "heart-healthy" substance. By taking omega-3 each day in the recommended dosage, most people will see a benefit in their cholesterol levels.


6. Boost your calcium intake. According to the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, a calcium supplement could decrease a person's cholesterol level between 2 and 4 percent. However, further studies still need to be done to prove the efficacy of this means of lowering cholesterol.
