Vitamin C is found in fresh fruits and vegetables as well as animal proteins. If you eat a healthy diet, it's not difficult to get the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. Vegetable Sources


Red peppers are an excellent source of vitamin C, with 190 mg per 100 grams of pepper. The parsley that we use to decorate our plates contains 130 mg of vitamin C. Broccoli and Brussels sprouts have 80 to 90 mg per 100 gram serving. Cauliflower, garlic, spinach, cabbage, potato, and tomatoes are all good sources of vitamin C, with between 20 to 40 mg of vitamin C.


Carrots, avocado, asparagus, and beets all have between 5-10 mg of vitamin C per 100g.


Animal Sources


Most animal products contain some vitamin C. Since most meat is cooked, some of the vitamin C is lost in the cooking process. The amounts given here are for raw meat. The amount of vitamin C remaining in cooked meat will vary depending on the cooking method, temperature and time.


Liver contains the highest amount vitamin C, with up to 30 mg. Raw oysters contain 30 mg. Organ meats are also good sources of vitamin C. Raw milk contains vitamin C, but the pasteurized milk in the supermarkets contains only trace amounts.


Fortified Foods


Many foods are fortified with vitamin C, meaning that vitamin C. 3. Add ¼ teaspoon of retinol or crushed vitamin A tablets to the moisturizer, and stir until both products are thoroughly blended.

Fruits, Vegetables and Vitamins


The amount of fruits and vegetables that a child requires depends on her age. Children 4 through 8 years of age should consume about 1 1/2 cups of fruits and vegetables each day. Children ages 9 through 13 should eat about 2 1/2 cups of fruits and vegetables daily. Children need a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to keep their bodies functioning properly. Dark green, leafy vegetables and orange vegetables are healthiest and offer the most nutrients, says the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Children should also consume a lot of blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. These berries contain a great amount of antioxidants. According to the National Cancer Institute, antioxidants can help fight against cancer and other diseases.


Other Necessary Foods








The USDA Food Guide Pyramid suggests giving children ages 4 through 13 about 4 to 6 ounces of grains per day. Half of those grains should consist of whole grains. Rice, whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, cereal and pasta are examples of healthy grains. Children should have at least 2 or 3 cups of milk or other calcium-rich foods daily. Finally, a child needs about 3 to 5 ounces of healthy meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts each day.


Healthy Vitamin-Enriched Foods


Dairy products, broccoli, cherries, oranges and plums are great sources of calcium. Asparagus, corn, beans, pineapple, mushrooms, peas, cabbage, cantaloupe, watermelon, potatoes and lettuce are great sources of B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B9). Healthy foods offering plenty of fiber, folic acid, potassium and iron are squash, apples, spinach, pears, bananas, lima beans, kiwi, tomatoes and nuts.

If you decide to give your child a multivitamin, make sure it includes vitamin D. Studies conducted by Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center found that 70 percent of American children have low levels of vitamin D. According to the Mayo Clinic, vitamin D deficiency can impair children's bone development and put them at risk for heart disease. The six most important vitamins and minerals for children are vitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium and iron. All of these vitamins and minerals can be found in foods, and are also available in a children's multivitamin. Contrary to popular belief, swimming is not generally considered an ideal way to lose weight. Unless you are an expert, the movements and strokes are usually less efficient than land-based aerobics. On the plus side, swimming makes an excellent aerobic conditioner, and it has less impact on the body than running or other aerobics. Experts disagree on how effective swimming is as a form of weight loss, but you can make it more effective by maintaining proper form and increasing your lap speed.


Instructions


1. Improve your swimming technique and formal strokes. It sounds obvious, but studies have shown that serious swimmers--whose movements in the water are smooth and natural--burn considerably more calories than unskilled swimmers who simply paddle around. The better you get at swimming, the more effectively it helps you lose weight.


2. Alternate between more intensive swimming styles, like freestyle or butterfly, and more leisurely swimming styles, like breaststroke, backstroke or sidestroke. For instance, you could do 3 laps of freestyle and then 1 lap of breaststroke. This will increase and decrease your heart rate, helping you to burn calories more efficiently.








3. Watch the clock while you swim. Gauge the time it takes you to complete a lap and work on improving it consistently. Like running and similar activities, increasing your speed will allow you to burn more calories.








4. Start swimming slowly and build up your routine up over time. Begin with two or three swimming sessions a week--for about 60 minutes at a time--then build up to four or five sessions a week, then six or seven sessions. Similarly, work at swimming steadily for 30 seconds before taking a 30-second breather, then advance to swimming steadily for 45 seconds, then a minute. Efficient swimmers will complete a set of 20 to 30 laps without stopping.


5. Watch your appetite. Many swimmers report feeling hungry after their workout--unlike cycling or running, which tends to reduce one's appetite. Take care not to put those burned calories back on by eating a big meal after swimming.


6. Keep at it. Consistency is the biggest factor involved in weight loss. If you enjoy swimming and find it easier to exercise that way than by running or biking, then you may lose more pounds overall than you would through another form of exercise.


7. Use a partner or a swimming group to keep you motivated. Not only can they help you establish a routine and be consistent in your swimming, but trained swimmers can offer advice on improving your technique, and friendly competition can move you towards improving yourself much more quickly.

H. pylori--short for helicobacter pylori--is the bacteria responsible for most peptic ulcers. Symptoms of an ulcer include a gnawing or burning sensation in the stomach, nausea and bloating. Although many ulcers heal by themselves, they can sometimes perforate and cause internal bleeding. If you think you have an ulcer, you should see your physician. The standard medical treatment for H. pylori is antibiotics and medication to reduce stomach acid, but people often use home remedies for additional relief.


Theories and Remedies








Since H. pylori seems to thrive in strong stomach acids, some home remedies focus on raising alkalinity in the stomach. Try sodium bicarbonate (baking soda, 1/2 tsp. dissolved in 1 cup water) or any commercial antacid containing bismuth. Other home remedies are intended to raise acidity to a point where H. pylori cannot survive. To try this theory, drink lemon juice in warm water in the morning and 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar before bed. A third approach involves eating foods with antibacterial properties, such as grapes, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. According to recent studies, it is the ellagic acid in these fruits that inhibits the growth of H. pylori. Other antibacterial foods you can try are bananas and garlic. Still other remedies focus on natural antioxidants like Vitamin C, taken in megadoses of 5g per day. You can also try digestive stimulants like pineapple juice and fresh ginger juice, and spices that stimulate blood flow in the stomach, particularly cayenne pepper. Coconut oil has become more popular as a remedy recently. According to biochemist Jon J. Kabara, Ph.D., the lauric acid in coconut oil is an effective inhibitor of H. pylori. Finally, you can try teas brewed from licorice or slippery elm; they have properties that protect musocal tissue.


Precautions


Before using any home remedy, evaluate it to make sure its ingredients will not aggravate other medical conditions. For example, baking soda contains large amounts of sodium--contraindicated for high blood pressure--coconut oil is high in polyunsaturated fat and megadoses of Vitamin C can contribute to formation of kidney stones. If the pain, bloating or nausea from a peptic ulcer worsens, stop taking the remedy and consult a doctor.


Prevention


Certain substances are known to worsen stomach conditions; these include smoking, caffeine and alcohol. Avoid them.
