Treat A Dog'S Sensitive Stomach

There's not much you can do to stop it, but you can try these simple remedies to try to limit how long it will last.

1. Make sure the virus takes its vitamins. That's right, zap it with zinc. Check out your nearest health food store and ask for zinc. 3. Skip the junk food. Unfortunately, what you eat plays a role in how fast you can get rid of that cold sore. The virus needs foods rich in arginine to feed, so put that virus on a diet. That means no chocolate, beer, grain cereals or peanuts until that blister is gone.


4. Try some healing oils. Emu oil is great because it sinks through seven layers of skin. Most oils only lie on the top layer. Emu oil also has great antiseptic properties; it can heal and help prevent scaring. Vitamin E oil is also good for healing.


5. Try some preventative measures once you have this blister under control. Reduce stress, which can signal the sleeping virus and wake it up. Switch out your toothbrush; you don't want to reinfect yourself after you just got rid of the cold sore. In fact, when you feel the tingle, toss the toothbrush. Replace it again after the cold sore is gone.

Light therapy is one of the leading treatments for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Doctors sometimes also prescribe light therapy to treat sleep disorders, attention-deficit disorders, circadian rhythm disruptions and other conditions. The proper intensity and quality of light is the most important quality to consider for light therapy. Grow lights, intended for growing plants indoors, may actually be harmful to use for light therapy.


What is Light Therapy?


In order to consider whether grow lights are appropriate for light therapy, it is important to understand exactly what light therapy is. Patients sit at a prescribed distance from a box containing fluorescent bulbs for a certain period at a certain time each day. The light is on and positioned slightly above eye level to mimic the direction of sunlight. The patient must have his eyes open; light therapy does not work during sleep or with closed eyes. Patients are free to work, read, or have a meal as long as they do not move away from the light box. They must face the light box but not look directly into the light sources. Time varies for each individual, but 30 minutes a day is a common starting point, according to the Center for Environmental Therapeutics.


Measuring Light


The intensity of a light therapy box is given in lux. Lux is an international unit of measure of light falling on an object at a certain distance. The recommended intensity for light therapy boxes is 10,000 lux. It does not matter what kind of light is used, such as full-spectrum or incandescent, as long as the intensity is sufficient, according to Dr. Raymond W. Lam, Director of the Mood Disorders Center of the University of British Columbia Hospital.


Is a Grow Light Enough?


Choosing a grow light for light therapy, therefore, seems possible. However, grow lights are measured and sold according to their wattage. Therefore, it would be necessary to convert from watts to lux to find a grow light with enough intensity for light therapy. The problem is that wattage is a measure of power coming from the light, and lux is a measure of light falling on an object at a distance from the light. There are ways to convert the numbers mathematically, but the two measurements are actually measuring entirely different things. In addition, grow lights that are intense enough for light therapy are usually so hot that to sit near enough to them would cause burns on the skin.


The biggest problem in finding an appropriate grow light for light therapy is that they are designed for growing plants, not for light therapy. Lights that are not specifically designed for light therapy can harm eyes and skin because they do not filter out harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, according to the Center for Environmental Therapeutics. Furthermore, light boxes for light therapy should be rated at 10,000 lux, have a UV filter, and give off white light as opposed to colored light.


Ultimately, it is safer and more effective to use a light box specifically designed for light therapy than to try to substitute a grow light.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is also known as ubiquinone (taken from the word "ubiquitous," meaning widespread) because it's found in every human cell mitochondria. It's an essential component in producing energy from oxygen. The highest concentrations of cell mitochondria are found in some of the hardest-working cells in the body, those in the heart, brain, liver and kidneys. The heart especially depends on CoQ10 to maintain normal rhythm and to pump blood throughout the body.


History


Dr. Frederick Crane, Ph.D., was the first to isolate CoQ10 from beef heart mitochondria in 1957. Professor Karl Folkers and his assistants at Merck, Inc. analyzed its chemical structure and synthesized it in 1958. In 1965, Dr. Yuichi Yamamura of Japan was the first to use a derivative of CoQ10 to treat congestive heart failure. In 1972, Prof. Folkers, along with an Italian researcher, Gian Paolo Littarru, determined that human heart disease patients had deficient CoQ10 levels. Prof. Folkers received the National Medal of Science in 1990 for his CoQ10 research and findings.


Animal and Plant Sources


Red meat has been vilified as unhealthy, but it contains high concentrations of CoQ10, found mainly in organ meat--the liver, brain, heart and kidneys. It is also found in animal muscle, plus sardines, mackerel, soy oil and peanuts.


Therapeutic Benefits


Nine international controlled studies have established that CoQ10 supplements significantly improved heart muscle function, specifically diastolic function, in patients with congestive heart failure, especially those who started taking CoQ10 after the onset of their first attack. CoQ10 did not interfere with other heart medications. Diastolic dysfunction occurs when the heart muscle stiffens, interfering with its ability to pump blood.


Research








Some promising research studies reported in the Journal of the American Academy of Family Physicians have been done showing that CoQ10 effectively reduces the decline of motor skills and activities of daily living in people with Parkinson's disease. Preliminary studies have also shown that CoQ10 reduces the frequency of migraine headaches, lowers blood pressure, and stabilizes blood sugar levels in diabetics.


Dosage


Young people under 20 have adequate CoQ10 levels, but those levels decline after age 45. Vegans and people who don't eat red meat are at risk of having inadequate CoQ10 levels. About 30 mg to 50 mg per day are enough to maintain normal CoQ10 levels. For more serious health conditions such as heart ailments and Parkinson's disease, 200 mg to 500 mg per day is recommended.


Contraindications and Side Effects


Currently popular heart-healthy diets that severely restrict red meat can seriously endanger CoQ10 levels in the body. Statin drugs used to lower cholesterol also inhibit the body's production of CoQ10. No serious adverse side effects have been reported about ingesting CoQ10. Patients on warfarin (Coumadin) or other prescription medications can safely take low amounts of CoQ10, but need to be monitored by their health care practitioner.

With each puff, smokers inhale tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide and 200 known poisons into their lungs. Cigarette smokers often have deficiencies in vital minerals and vitamins, which makes them more susceptible to infections and disease. Smokers should consume a diet rich in minerals and antioxidants obtained from both food sources and supplements.


The Facts


The U.S. Government has approved 599 food additives, many of which are also used in the manufacture of cigarettes. Burning these chemicals changes their properties considerably, creating toxins known to cause cardiovascular disease, chronic emphysema or bronchitis and various cancers. In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 21 percent of the American population were classified as cigarette smokers.


Nutritional Needs Higher for Smokers


Smokers should focus on including foods high in calcium, folate, lycopene, vitamin E, zinc, selenium and omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables increases antioxidant intake, but a good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement may also be required.


Smoking and Vitamin C


One of the body's chief antioxidants, vitamin C, is drained from the body with each puff of a cigarette. A water-soluble vitamin not stored in the body, vitamin C must be ingested daily. The current recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C for healthy Americans 15 and older was recently revised upwards from 60 mg daily; the RDA for male smokers is now 125 mg and for female smokers 110 mg. However, researchers at the Linus Pauling Institute recommend at least 400 mg per day of vitamin C for healthy adults and between 1,000 to 2,000 mg per day for heavy smokers.


Fish Oil and Vitamin C


Vitamin E supplements of 400 to 800 iu per day have been found to be beneficial to smokers as well. Fish oil contains a high content of fat-soluble antioxidants and omega-3s. Fish oil may help protect against lung problems in smokers. A study of over 8,000 men aged 45 to 60 found that smokers who consumed fish two times per week or more sustained less smoking-related lung damage than did those who consumed fish less often.


Other Recommended Antioxidants


There are quite a few other minerals and naturally occurring compounds proven to defend the body against cardiovascular and other smoking-related disease, according to Dr. Emmanuel C. Opara, a member of the Sara W. Stedman Center for Nutritional Studies at Duke University Medical Center. Highly recommended supplements include lipoic acid (100 mg/day), taurine (1.5 gm/per day), coenzyme Q-10 (90 mg/day or higher), selenium (200 mcg per day), garlic, ginkgo biloba and polyphenols, found in grape seed extracts and red wine.


Warning


A limit of 2 grams (2,000 milligrams) daily of vitamin C is recommended to prevent diarrhea or other gastrointestinal upset. Nutritional supplementation is helpful in reducing health risks to smokers but cannot guarantee immunity to cancers or other smoking-related diseases.

Vitamins That Cause Diarrhea

Vitamins are a daily requirement essential for proper function. There are 13 essential vitamins for proper function; four of them are fat-soluble, and nine are water-soluble. While a balanced diet would provide the necessary amounts of these vitamins, many people make up for deficiencies by taking a multivitamin. Before you take a supplement, however, be cautious; too much of certain vitamins and too little of others can create stomach problems like diarrhea.


Overdoses That Cause Diarrhea


According to the vitamin guide on CNN Interactive's Food Central, excess amounts of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) can cause diarrhea. Apart from the discomfort of diarrhea, overdosing on these vitamins is not fatal. Vitamin C and vitamin B5 are are water-soluble vitamins that are excreted from your body by sweat and urine. Unless recommended by a doctor or nutritionist, you should avoid megadoses of any vitamins, minerals or supplements.


Overdoses of other water-soluble vitamins may not lead to diarrhea, but they can harm the body if continuously taken. As for fat-soluble vitamins, they take longer to leave the body, so continuously overdosing on these vitamins can eventually overwhelm the body and permanently damage organs.


Deficiencies That Cause Diarrhea


While taking too many vitamins can lead to diarrhea or worse, vitamin deficiencies also cause gastrointestinal problems. Niacin is a vitamin responsible for helping body cells produce energy. If your body is niacin-deficient, then you will have diarrhea (among other, more severe complications like mental disorientation and skin problems).


Avoid Vitamin-Induced Diarrhea


The daily requirements of any of these vitamins can be found in a generic multivitamin pill. It is important to eat a balanced diet with lean meats, fish, low-fat dairy, plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits to get the bulk of your vitamin needs. By eating a sensible diet and taking a multivitamin, you should meet your daily requirements and avoid diarrhea.


What Else Can Cause Diarrhea


There are other supplements that can can cause diarrhea in large doses, such as magnesium and fish oil. These are both excellent supplements for your health, but your body cannot digest large doses of either substance. Another likely culprit of diarrhea is if you are not careful about your diet and take vitamins to "make up" for it. The poor diet could lead to stomach problems, but a poor diet combined with vitamins could certainly provoke diarrhea because the body may not have the ability to digest the vitamins properly.


Finally, if you have had stomach surgery, or have a history of irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease or other conditions that affect the digestive system, you may be more sensitive to vitamin supplements than most people.

Use A Boiled Lemon To Cure A Cold

Everyone has suffered the misery of a cold. We identify colds by the symptoms we experience such as: congestion, a runny nose, coughing; a sore throat, aches and pains, a headache, fatigue and the chills. Colds do not come with fevers, and most of the time what we are describing is one of the rhinovirus family. They are miserable little bugs that humans have endured for centuries. Over those centuries people have developed home remedies to relieve the symptoms of the cold and to recover as quickly as possible. One of the favorite home remedy weapons for fighting the common cold is the lemon. Our mothers knew a thing or two before science understood the details. Lemons are rich in Vitamin C, which benefits the immune system, decreases toxicity and soothes the throat (when used with honey). Generally, lemons are mixed with other antioxidants, and six different home remedies are included here.


Instructions


1. Slice 1 inch of ginger root and bring it to a simmer in 8 oz. of water. Strain the liquid into a large glass and add 4 tbsp. of lemon juice and 3 tbsp. of honey. Allow the mixture to cool for five minutes. The ginger adds a decongestant, the lemon reduces mucus and the honey eases the throat.








2. Measure 1 tsp. of honey and two pinches of black pepper and mix with 10 drops of lightly boiled lemon juice. This creates a syrup that you can spoon as a dose. One dose every three hours, no more than three times. (Starving a cold.)


3. Put 1 shot of scotch into a 4 oz. glass tumbler, and add 2 tbsp. of honey. Squeeze 2 tsp. of lemon juice into the glass. Add your favorite tea bag, and fill the glass the rest of the way with almost boiling water. Allow the mixture to steep until cool enough to drink. Drink one full glass right before bed. (Not for children.) It aids in sleeping, relieves the sore throat, drains the sinuses and eases aches and pains.


4. Mix 1 cup boiling water with 2 tsp. honey and 2 tbsp. squeezed lemon. Add one bag of a white or mint tea. Bring to a soft boil. Allow the tea to steep for 15 minutes. The lemon reduces mucus, the cayenne eases body aches and pains and lowers fever and the mint helps to decongest and relax you.


5. Boil a lemon for seven to nine minutes and remove the juice. Use a quart pot and enough water to cover the lemon. Pour the juice into an 4 oz. glass, add 2 tbsp. of glycerin and stir well. Allow the mixture to rest for 10 minutes. Add 1 tbsp. of honey and allow the mixture to rest 10 minutes. Take 1 tbsp. once or twice daily. The syrup created by this recipe is effective for soothing sore throat.








6. Cut up a lemon and one half of an onion. Add 8 oz. of water to a quart sized pot and bring it to a boil. Allow it to cool, and then strain the liquid from the slices. Drink once or twice daily. This reduces symptoms such as nasal mucus but may taste unpleasant.
