Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that humans produce in the presence of UVB rays. During the 1930's, Professor A. Windaus at the University of Göttingen discovered that Vitamin D deficiency causes bone diseases, and recent research has linked low Vitamin D blood levels to breast, colon, prostrate and other cancers. About Vitamin D


Vitamin D is one of the few nutrients that the body can self-produce. It occurs naturally in three forms: calciferol, ergocalciferol and cholecalciferol (Vitamin D1, D2 and D3, respectively). Foods such as fish, egg yolks and cod liver oil contain calciferol. Mushrooms, algae and other lower-level organisms contain ergocalciferol. The cholesterol in your skin makes cholecalciferol when it encounters solar rays, but Vitamin D3 is also added to milk and cereals. You can get Vitamin D by eating plenty of these foods, taking supplements or going outside in sunny weather.


Vitamin D's Role in the Body








The body needs Vitamin D to absorb calcium, which is why calcium supplements often come with Vitamin D. Without Vitamin D, the calcium you get from foods or supplements is useless. Vitamin D also helps maintain stable blood levels of calcium.


Besides that, Vitamin D regulates cell activity and growth, stabilizes immune function, reduces inflammation, strengthens muscles, and optimizes cardiovascular function. It often works in concert with calcium, but it can also work independently.


Vitamin D and Cancer


Studies have established an inverse relationship between Vitamin D blood levels and cancer, particularly reproductive cancer. A 2008 study at the University of Toronto followed 512 women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer since 1996. The women with the lowest Vitamin D levels developed the most aggressive forms of breast cancer.


However, some studies have indicated that there is no relationship. Vitamin D may prevent cancer through its regulatory role in cell growth and activity. But these findings are not conclusive and further research is underway.


Why Deficiency is Common


Getting enough Vitamin D can be challenging. Very few foods naturally contain it. The foods that do have it, such as mushrooms or egg yolks, contain small amounts. Older people or those with metabolic disorders produce little Vitamin D. Moreover, if you live in a northern climate, the sun's rays are not powerful enough to produce Vitamin D from November to March. Additionally, the melanin in dark-hued people's skin blocks UV rays, which might explain why African-Americans have the lowest Vitamin D levels. Due to the risk of skin cancer, lighter-skinned people tend to wear sunscreen or avoid the sun altogether, which puts them at risk for deficiency.


Precautions


To maintain optimal health and possibly minimize cancer risk, doctors recommend getting 15 minutes of sun three times a week or taking a Vitamin D3 supplement. The sun is the most powerful source of Vitamin D, but those who are extremely fair-skinned should take supplements instead. Taking megadoses of Vitamin D can be toxic, and taking cod liver oil can also be toxic due to its high Vitamin A levels.

Fix Iron Deficiency Symptoms In Plants

Iron deficiency -- or iron chlorosis -- in a plant is indicated by the yellowing or whitening of leaves and usually occurs on new growth, although it can spread to old growth if the deficiency is severe. This happens because of a high alkalinity (pH) in the soil that makes the iron present unavailable to the plant. Plants use iron to create chlorophyll and to photosynthesize. Without the green chlorophyll, the leaves become yellow and then go brown around the edges as they die.


Instructions


1. Use a pH test kit to test your soil. These can be found at most nurseries or hardware stores and they're easy to use. Place a sample of your soil in the test tube, add in the testing solution, then compare it to the enclosed color chart.








2. Determine which chelated iron fertilizer is needed for your garden's alkalinity. There are several formulas and each is recommended for a different pH. Read the label and look for a high percentage of chelated iron.


3. Mix your liquid iron fertilizer in a pump-up sprayer. Follow the products directions for foliar application.


4. Spray the plants that are showing iron chlorosis. It's best to spray in the evenings so wet leaves aren't burned by the heat of the sun.








5. Repeat the process about every month during the growing season of the plants. Some plants may need more frequent applications. Watch the plants and if they show symptoms of iron deficiency, give them a spray.

Metabolism & Calcium Deposits

Calcium occurs in the body more than any other element. It is present in bones, nails, hair, teeth and nerves as well as being a muscle relaxant and a vital mineral for detoxifying the blood. Calcium increases the secretion of insulin and inhibits thyroid-releasing hormones, but when the body has too much or too little calcium or it is not properly metabolized, problems occur.


Significance


Calcium deposits are the result of poor metabolism of calcium rather than too much calcium in the body. Calcium absorption is regulated by magnesium and phosphorus levels, vitamins A and D, and the thyroid, which depends on iodine to function. Too little iodine can lead to low thyroid activity, resulting in calcium becoming bio-unavailable. This in turn may lead to calcium deposits in the soft tissues. Too much sugar and fluoride can upset the calcium/phosphorus balance and inhibit the absorption of calcium in the intestines, again leading to deposits.


Types


When there is too much unmetabolized calcium in the body, it migrates in lumps to the soft connective tissues between joints. This condition is called calcinosis and comes in two main forms: metastatic and dystophic.


Metastatic calcinosis is either hypercalcemia, which occurs when there is too much calcium in the blood, or hyperphosphatemia, which occurs when the calcium is not metabolized because of too much phosphorus in the blood.


Tumoral calcinosis is classified as metastatic. Research suggests that this condition is hereditary and results from elevated phosphorus levels. Metatstatic calcinosis is a long-standing complaint and often related to thyroid activity or renal disease.


Dystrophic calcinosis is when calcium deposits occur in the soft tissues but there is no sign of abnormal phosphorus levels.


Effects


Mestastatic calcinosis affects lungs, eyes, brain, kidneys, stomach and the soft tissues between and around joints. Tumoral calcinosis causes huge calcified masses to form in the tissue and muscles around hips, shoulders, elbows, hands and chest walls. Dystrophic calcinosis is less obvious. Calcium deposits form in the soft tissues but not as a result of abnormal phosphorus or calcium metabolism. This condition is often detected at the site of scarring or previous injury.


Treatment


There is little effective treatment for calcinosis. Large calcium deposits are generally removed by surgery; however, the trauma induced by surgery may cause more calcium deposits to form.








Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed, but they offer pain relief rather than cure. Various antacids may be given to control the amount of phosphorus and allow calcium to be properly metabolized. Warfarin has been known to have some benefit.


A dietary substance called myo-inositol has been used on animals and shown to inhibit the formation of calcium deposits, but as of June 2010, this treatment is still experimental.


Considerations


To facilitate the metabolism of calcium it is important to eat a balanced diet that is calcium-rich and low in sugar and saturated fat. Most soft drinks and sodas contain excessive amounts of sugar and fluoride, which can upset the body's calcium/phosphorus balance. The body's ability to metabolize calcium diminishes with age and might lead to osteoporosis as well as calcinosis. Regular weight-bearing exercise is also recommended, and if you exercise outdoors, you will also benefit from a dose of vitamin D.

TBS television network has recognized the value of humor in commercials by creating a show called "TBS Funniest Commercials." Besides the entertainment value of funny commercials, humor does sell, as long as it supports your pitch and attracts the viewer to your purpose (see References). There are certain themes and characters to consider including in your ad because they tend to attract a positive reaction in viewers and can easily be associated with your product or service.


Kids


Children are often used for comedic relief in commercials. A baby that talks or acts like an adult is a common theme since it is so unusual. E-Trade's "Talking Baby" commercial, which first appeared during Superbowl XLII, increased the visibility of the company's stock trading services through comedy. Consider one of the following themes involving kids for your commercial: talking, dancing or silly babies, kids behaving badly or kids taking on the role of adults.


Cats and Other Animals


Cute cats or dogs in commercials tend to make people smile. Fresh Step used this theme in a commercial called "Bloodhound" in which the cat and dog team up to find the cat's litter box. Royal Mail, the postal service of the United Kingdom, used a dancing cat in a successful commercial spot to sell personalized stamps (see Resources). In fact, any animal taking on a human role, such as talking, acting or working in an office, as is the case in Vitamin Water's "Mother Nature" ad spots, is a safe bet for a funny commercial.


Bloopers


The beauty of using a blooper reel, real or staged, for a funny commercial is that it instantly grabs attention, gets a chuckle and is hard to forget. Once you have the viewer's attention, you have to immediately give him your pitch or else the value, to you as the advertiser, or the commercial will be lost. A blooper commercial is a good idea if your goal is to build brand recognition for your product or service since a blooper is memorable but may not prompt immediate action from the viewer. An example of this would be the "Peyton Manning Priceless Blooper" commercials produced by Mastercard.


Keep in mind that the bloopers have to be related to the point of the commercial (the product or service being sold) or else you risk losing your audience. In other words, the viewer will not get the point and may be annoyed and mystified instead of intrigued. Pick a reel that makes sense in relation to your product. For instance, a blooper reel where someone runs into a pole would work for a company selling eye glasses or contacts.
