Vitamins & Postexercise Recovery

Energy is stored in the form of glycogen in the muscle and liver. Athletes can maximize their nutritional stores by consuming post-recovery food and fluids within thirty minutes of their activity. This is when blood flow and digestive enzymes are at their peak. Research has shown that a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein optimizes glycogen storage and facilitates the repair of damaged muscle tissue. While less is known about the advantages of vitamins post recovery, research is underway.


B Vitamins


B vitamins function in energy production, the creation of red blood cells and tissue repair. In the Oct. 2006, International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, researchers by the names of Woolf and Manore at Arizona State University found that exercise may increase the need for some B vitamins by twice the current recommendations. However, these needs are easily met through an athlete's increased consumption of grains to fuel their activities.


Vitamin D


Vitamin D is required for calcium absorption and the regulation of phosphorus levels. All three nutrients are critical in healthy bone formation and maintenance. There is significant concern that the current Vitamin D recommendations of 200 International Units (IU) for ages 19 to 49 is insufficient. Athletes living in northern climates and those who primarily practice indoors are at risk for vitamin D deficiency. Good sources of vitamin D include salmon, tuna, and mackerel, fortified low fat milk, dairy products and cereals.


Antioxidants








Antioxidants include vitamin C and E. Endurance athletes may benefit from an additional 100 to 1,000mg vitamin C daily according to the position statement published by the American Dietetic Association and the American College of Sports Medicine. Foods rich in vitamin C include oranges, strawberries, cantaloupe, red pepper, broccoli and tomatoes. Vitamin E's value in reducing inflammation and muscle soreness during recovery is still under investigation. Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin and can have toxic effects when consumed in excess.


Home Remedies


While post recovery drinks, bars and gels are available, two home remedies have also been heavily researched and include many of the nutrients listed above. In May 2009, the Journal of the International Society for Sports Nutrition published research led by Dr. Kramer at the University of Texas which showed that muscle glycogen and protein synthesis using whole grain cereal and low fat milk was equal to that of a sports drink. Another recent study conducted by researchers from James Madison University, presented at the 2009 American College of Sports Medicine's annual conference showed no difference between low-fat chocolate milk and sports drinks when comparing muscle soreness, mental or physical fatigue.


Food Guide Pyramid








Athletes who follow the food guide pyramid and consume two cups of fruits and 2 ½ cups of vegetables daily should be able to obtain and adequate supply of vitamins through their normal diet. If a vitamin mineral supplement is desired as extra insurance, an athlete needs to select one that provides no more than 100% of the daily value (DV). This combined with their oral intake should meet the increased nutritional needs post exercise recovery. A glass of chocolate milk and a bowl of cereal wouldn't hurt either.

Poison Information On Rat Poison

Small amounts of rat poison can be deadly.


Dealing with an infestation of rodents can be very unpleasant. Dealing with the rodenticides can also be unpleasant and dangerous---especially when pets and small children are present in the home. The toxins in rodent baits that kill mice and rats can also cause damage or kill a child or house pet exposed to it. Even contact with the skin can be dangerous because some of the poisons used in rodenticides can be absorbed through the skin. Several types of chemicals and three major types of poisons are used in the manufacturing of rodenticides.


Types


There are three main types of rat poison, and each works differently to exterminate rats. The first type is Bromethalin. Bromethalin is a neurotoxin that kills a rat a few hours after one ingestion. Bromethalin is generally a safer option for people with pets. Anti-coagulants are one of the most common types, the most popular being fumarin and warfarin. They contain chemicals that interfere with blood clotting. These types should not be used around children or pets. The third type is vitamin based. This type fills the rat's body with fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D. This kind usually takes a full day to kill a rodent.


Bromethalin


Bromethalin is a highly effective rodenticide. It works by affecting permeability of the cell membranes resulting in the cell swelling and losing function. After ingestion, central nervous system dysfunction sets it, killing the rat. Acute cerebral swelling and paralysis is seen and death is seen with both high and low doses. Death is usually due to respiratory failure. With high doses, results are seen within hours. These include hyperexcitability, tremors, exaggerated reflexes, seizures and death. Low doses cause several symptoms including depression, lack of appetite, vomiting, tremors, paresis of one or more limbs, paralysis and death.


Fumarin


Fumarin, also known as coumfuryl, is a derivative of coumarin. Fumarin is used as a rodenticide. Effects of fumarin depends on the amount of chemical exposure and how chemical contact occurred. Fumarin is highly toxic and can be absorbed through the skin. Fumarin side effects include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, bloody urine or feces, extensive bruising without injury, fatigue, eye irritation, hemorrhage, shortness of breath with exertion, shock and fluid in lungs. In rodents, death from exposure occurs easily.


Warfarin


Warafin is odorless and tasteless and potent in small amounts as a rodenticide. Warfarin does not act rapidly---it takes about a week for a noticeable reduction in rodent population. Recently, resistant strains of mice and rats have been noticed. Warfarin is also toxic to humans. Warafarin is a human teratogen. It causes birth defects such as fatal hemorrhaging of the fetus, malformations and mental retardation. However, a single dose of Warfarin bait would not harm a fetus as the amount of Warfarin in a single prepared rodent bait is very low.


Vitamin D Rodenticides


Vitamin D3 rodenticides, also known as cholecalciferol, have toxic effects on the liver, kidneys and myocardium (the middle and thickest wall of the heart). Early signs of vitamin D-induced hypercalcemia are faituge, weakness, headache and nausea. Hypercalcemia is a deadly buildup of calcium in the body. Kidney damage and myocardium are both effects of hypercalcemia. Polyuria (excessive urination), polydipdia (excessive thrist), proteinuria (great amounts of protein in urine) and azotemia (abnormal levels of nitrogen-containing compounds) result from acute renal tube injury, which likely leads to death.


Conclusion








If contact with any of these poisons is suspected, the victim must be rushed to the hospital for care. Sometimes even a small amount of poison can create a serious problem. You should also call a poison control center, which can help you understand treat the victim and possibly reverse the effects of the toxic chemicals. Bubble gum and candy are sweet treats that often find their way into hair or stuck in gooey blobs on carpet, upholstery or other fabric. You can't just wipe off a sticky mess that has become embedded in a textile's fibers. The type of gum or candy bear you have stuck determines which product you need.


Instructions


1. Freeze the gum with ice if it's caught in some hair, do not cut it out! You don't need to. Make the gum as frozen as possible, without pulling on it or the hair. Once it has frozen, break the gum off in clumps, refreezing as you work until it is removed from the hair.








2. Work olive or vegetable oil into any small amounts of glue left in the hair. Work it out of the hair without pulling the hair.


3. For upholstery, carpet or fabrics, use a high-pressure steam cleaner on either gum or candy. Aim a jet of steam directly at the gum or candy to soften it. Scrape it off with a knife. If you do not have a steam cleaner available, use a blow dryer at a low setting in the same manner.


4. Freeze the gum on the carpet or other fabric, as with the gum on the hair. When the gum is frozen, slowly peel the gum up. Pulling the gum out can destroy the fabrics; so you want to be careful. If gum gets sticky again, re-freeze it. Keeping it frozen keeps the gum intact, and you'll have less mess left behind.


5. Any color or residue left on a carpet or other textile once the majority of gum is gone can be blotted away using a commercial spot remover.

4. Test the widest tops of the carrots to see that they fit easily into the hopper. If they don't, make long-ways cuts in the carrots so that they will fit easily into the hopper. Cramming carrots that don't fit can crack your juice machine and/ or cause undue stress to the motor.








5. Place a glass under the drain spout. You'll want to watch as the liquid first starts coming through because sometimes it can spray further than you think. The tallest glass that fits is usually the best choice Some juicers come with a glass that's the perfect size.


6. Turn your juice machine on and begin to feed the carrots into the hopper. Use the special tool to force them down into the machine. Don't force too many in at a time or they can become wedged together. If this happens, turn the machine off and use a table knife to rearrange them until they're floating freely in the hopper.


7. Try using the shredded carrot fibers to make a carrot cake, cookies or pancakes. You can also add the carrot fibers to your garden or compost pile.


8. Wash your machine parts as soon as you're finished using it. Titration is a method used to determine the concentration of a compound in solution. A compound in a solution of known concentrate is added to the unknown solution. The two compounds react, and when the reaction is complete, it's possible to calculate the volume of the unknown solution. Iodine is a useful compound for performing titrations.


Vitamin C


An unknown concentration of vitamin C or ascorbic acid can be determined using iodine. When ascorbic acid comes into contact with iodine, the chemical reaction that occurs produces dehydroascorbic acid and iodide. A starch indicator is added to the vitamin C solution to indicate when the chemical reaction is complete. As long as there is still ascorbic acid in the solution, the iodine will react with it and become iodide. When all the ascorbic acid has reacted and become dehydroascorbic acid, the iodine will react with the starch to create a dark blue color, signaling the reaction is complete. The dehydroascorbic acid can be measured to determine the concentration of vitamin C in the original solution.


Thiosulphate


The concentration of sodium thiosulphate in solution can be determined using an iodine titration. An iodine solution added to a sodium thiosulphate solution of unknown concentration will create oxidized iodine and tetrathionate ions. Starch is added to the sodium thiosulphate solution. Iodine is then added slowly. The solution will turn a dark blue color. When the dark blue disappears, it indicates the reaction is complete and the concentration of soduium thiosulphate can be calculated from the amount of tetrathionate ions that are produced and the amount of iodine solution used.


Copper in Superconductors


Iodine titration can also be used to calculate the amount of copper in high temperature superconductors, but the process is more involved than the simple titrations used to determine ascorbic acid concentration or sodium thiosulphate concentration. A double titration process is used. The chemical potassium thiocyanate is used release absorbed iodine to continue the chemical reaction. What Are Cpt Code Modifiers

CPT modifiers are used for medical billing purposes to give additional information.


CPT stands for Current Procedural Terminology. The CPT refers to a medical procedure code book that contains codes and descriptions of procedures, organized by body system. The first section of the CPT manual contains evaluation and management (E/M) codes used for billing physician encounters, whether in an office, hospital or outpatient setting. Modifiers

Bilateral Modifier

E/M Modifiers


Evaluation and management (E/M) modifiers are used to note special circumstances of a patient's encounter with the physician. Common E/M modifiers are -21, -24, -25 and -57. A modifier -21 means the E/M service was prolonged. The -24 and -25 modifiers refer to unrelated medical visits. The -24 modifier is for an office visit billed during a postoperative period that is unrelated to the operation. The -25 modifier would be listed on the second procedure code. The -57 modifier states that a decision for surgery was made during the office visit.


Anesthesia Modifiers


Several modifiers are available to add information to anesthesia codes. A -23 modifier notes that unusual anesthesia was used. A -47 modifier is used when the anesthesia was administered by the physician.


Common CPT Modifiers


The -26 modifier means that only the professional component of the service was performed. For example, if a physician is reading a patient the results of his x-rays that were performed at another location, he would bill for only the professional component. Mandated services such as pre-employment drug screens or worker's compensation evaluations would require the use of a -32 modifier. A -51 modifier is used to identify multiple procedures were performed while a -52 modifier states that reduced services were performed. A discontinued procedure is identified with a -53 modifier. Modifier -54 refers to surgical care only, a -55 to postoperative care only, and a -56 for preoperative care only. The -66 identifies a surgical team performed the procedure, a -76 modifier shows a procedure has been repeated by the same physician, and -77 shows a procedure has been repeated by another physician. A modifier -78 identifies an unplanned return to operating room following the initial procedure. The -79 modifier identifies an unrelated procedure performed during the postop period by the same physician. Modifier -80 states an assistant surgeon performed the procedure and -81 identifies a minimum assistant surgeon. Modifiers -90, -91, -92 refer to pathology and lab tests. A -99 modifier is used to show that multiple modifiers are being used on the claim, and is used only on the first CPT code listed on the claim.

2. Use a sterile syringe and needle for each injection. Do not reuse equipment. Draw the vitamin solution by piercing the rubber top with the needle, then inverting the bottle and drawing out a little more than the recommended dose by pulling on the plunger.


3. Turn the bottle right side up, then extract the syringe. Hold the syringe needle up, then expel any air in the needle by pressing on the plunger.


4. Part the hair at the injection site and swab the skin with a cotton ball or gauze dipped in rubbing alcohol. Allow the skin to dry before giving the injection.


5. Insert the needle in all the way at a 90-degree angle. Depress the plunger smoothly, then withdraw the needle in the same direction it went in.

5. Practice this meditation on a daily basis. Set aside a certain time each morning--preferably between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.--for meditation. The more you practice, the easier it will be to use your pineal gland.

Fda Requirements For Vitamins

When people hear the acronym FDA (the Food and Drug Administration), they think about an agency that is responsible for ensuring that all foods and prescription drugs produced in the United States are safe for consumers to purchase and use. And although the FDA is charged with the responsibility of ensuring safety for consumers--in regard to food and drugs, at least--that isn't the case with dietary supplements (vitamins), unfortunately. The authority for vitamin oversight has been given to another, and it isn't the FDA.


1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act


In 1994, the Clinton Administration signed into law the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). This Act--regulating the marketing of vitamins--was akin to asking the fox to guard the hen house, since the vitamin manufacturers were the ones entrusted with oversight of safety and effectiveness of vitamins and dietary supplements; not the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as one might expect. Instead, the FDA was only charged with the responsibility of overseeing the labels on the vitamin bottles; not its safety or effectiveness.


Misconception about the DSHEA and FDA


Unfortunately, many people erroneously thought that the new Act was created to ensure that vitamins would be as stringently monitored and regulated by the FDA as food and drugs are, thus preventing vitamin and dietary supplement manufacturers from putting too much of, too little of, or too detrimental an item in their product(s) for sale. But this was a misconception on the part of some of the public, due to the FDA being involved at least in the regulation of the labels of dietary supplements.


Purpose of the DSHEA and Its Role in Vitamin Oversight








Ensuring safety and effectiveness via the FDA was not the purpose of this Act at all. Instead, this Act was merely put in place to regulate whether vitamin manufacturers labeled their product properly based on the actual ingredients they claimed were in it. The vitamins didn't have to work, or even be in compliance with daily recommended dosages; they just had to state honestly on their label what were the actual ingredients inside the bottle, regardless of whether those ingredients were beneficial nutritionally or not. Therefore, the FDA was only made responsible for oversight regarding vitamin labels; not vitamin safety or effectiveness.


FDA and Vitamin Requirements


Therefore it isn't the FDA that is responsible for ensuring that vitamins are safe (or effective at all) before they are manufactured or put on a store's shelves for consumers to purchase. It is, unfortunately, the vitamin manufacturer who has that responsibility, given to them by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) in 1994.


In addition, there does not exist any minimum or maximum limitations on how much of a nutrient can be present in a vitamin or dietary supplement, or how little. Therefore, some vitamins could contain amounts in excess of the daily recommended dosage and some could be very lacking in that regard, affecting to some degree the consumer who takes them.


Significant


Although the FDA is not responsible for safety of dietary supplements put in the marketplace, it does, however, have the enforcement authority to respond to serious public health emergencies or illness caused by such dietary supplements. What Supplements Are Good For Rosacea Treatment

To take oregano oil orally, place one to three drops of oregano oil in an 8-oz. glass of water, juice or milk. Or, place one drop under your tongue twice a day and mix with 1 tsp. of honey, maple syrup, or olive oil.


Vitamin K


Your body needs vitamin K to help the blood clot and to allow the skin to reabsorb the blood that has begun to pool, causing the thread-like streaks that reappear on your face. Vitamin K is in cabbage, spinach, cereals, soybeans, and other vegetables. According to the U.S. recommended daily allowance, males 19 and older should take 120 mcg daily; females 19 and older should take 90 mcg; pregnant and nursing females 19 and older should take 90 mcg.


Zinc Sulfate


Zinc is an essential mineral that aids the healing of the epidermis or top layer of the skin, and it keeps vitamin A blood levels regulated. Some foods abundant in zinc include red meat, oysters, poultry, nuts, beans, crab, lobster, fortified breakfast cereals, whole grains, and dairy products. In capsule form, take 100 mg three times a day to decrease rosacea symptoms.


Vitamin A and Retinoids


Try vitamin A to diminish symptoms of rosacea and keep the skin healthy. The retinoids in vitamin A in both topical and supplement forms are beneficial for most skin disorders, including rosacea, because it helps diminish inflammation, renew skin cells, and reduce oily skin.
