Fertilizer Effects


Nutrient-depleted soil environments will cause plants to develop deficiencies that appear as distressed or damaged plant structures.Signs of distress may appear as dry leaves and stems, rotting plant structures or stunted growth. As plants ingest macronutrients in large amounts, soil environments can become depleted of these essential elements. Fertilizer applications help to replenish soil environments by replacing these missing soil nutrients. Most fertilizer materials contain varying proportions of nitrogen, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorous and sulfur depending on the type of plant and soil environment involved. In effect, adding fertilizer enables plants to carry out normal food production and growth processes.


Vitamins








Plants use the food or sugar manufactured in leaf and stem structures to produce vitamin materials in their cells. Plant-soil nutrients also assist in the vitamin production process. Nutrient materials from the soil and from fertilizers enable cell structures to coordinate the chemical processes needed to produce vitamins. Within the plant structure, vitamins and hormones carry out similar roles in terms of initiating specific cell growth processes in leaves, flowers and stems. Plant vitamins consist of organic molecules that help to catalyze or trigger chemical reactions inside cells, much like hormones do.


Plant Growth Regulators


Much like fertilizer applications, plant growth regulators are applied to a plant's leaves and/or soil environment. Plant growth regulators contain hormone and vitamin materials that have been extracted from plant tissues and in some cases, synthetic compounds. As these liquid materials come in concentrated forms, plants can only tolerate small amounts at a time. Five categories of plant growth regulators affect different areas within the plant growth process.








Auxin regulators affect flower formation, root growth and fruit growth, while gibberellin regulators encourage cell division processes and seed germination. Cytokinin regulators also stimulate cell division processes. When applied with auxin regulators, high concentrations of cytokinin versus auxins will stimulate shoot growth, while high concentrations of auxin will stimulate root growth. Ethylene regulators exist in gas form and specifically induce fruit ripening and eventual cell death. The fifth category--abscisic acid regulators--actually function as growth inhibitors that interrupt seed germination processes and increase plant dormancy rates in term leaves and fruit dying off.

Gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the second most common neurotransmitter chemical in the human brain. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter--it calms and reduces the activity of neurons. Some anti-anxiety medications work by promoting greater availability of GABA to brain cells.


While many of the basic functions of GABA have become better understood in the last decade, scientists continue to make new discoveries about GABA and the multiple types of GABA receptors, each of which can play a different role in neural cells.


What are Neurotransmitters?


Neurotransmitters are chemical molecules that brain cells (neurons) and nerve cells use to communicate with each other.


These molecules are released from one neuron (the presynaptic neuron) and travel across a gap (known as a synapse) to attach themselves to a specific receptor site on an opposing neuron (the postsynaptic neuron). When molecules of a given neurotransmitter dock at its dedicated receptor site, specific functions are activated in the receiving cell.


The neurotransmitter may then be re-released back into the synapse for re-uptake into the presynaptic neuron, at which point the transmission process can be repeated.


What Does GABA Do?


GABA is known as an inhibitory neurotransmitter. This means that when it docks at the receptor site of a neuron, it reduces the activity level of that neuron and makes it less likely to fire an electrical signal ("action potential").


GABA achieves this because GABA receptor sites also control the admission of chloride ions into neurons and potassium ions out of neurons. Chloride increases the negative electrical charge within the neuron, and potassium increases the positive charge outside the neuron. This makes it more difficult for the neuron to fire the action potential and excite adjoining neurons.


How Does GABA Affect Psychology and Physiology?








Because GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, it is involved in processes in which neural activity is reduced, such as anxiety reduction, calming, and release of tension.


Some anti-anxiety medications like benzodiazepines and barbiturates primarily work by increasing the amount of GABA in the synapses that is available to bond to GABA receptor sites. Alcohol also promotes the influx of chloride ions into brain cells, and so amplifies the normal effects of GABA.


Caffeine, on the other hand, reduces the available GABA in the synapse, promoting effects like nervousness, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping.


The calming and inhibitory effects of GABA upon neuronal activity also has important physiological effects. For example, the cardiac vagal neurons (CVNs) are areas of the brain that moderate and slow heart rate, keeping it from becoming too rapid. GABA's inhibitory effect upon these neurons can cause heart rate to increase.


Medications that act upon GABA receptors are known as "GABAergic" drugs.

Ester of wood rosin, or ester gum, is a food additive in many fruit juices and sodas. The substance is acidic and acts as a stabilizer or a thickening agent for certain foods and drinks. Produced from tree stumps, ester of wood rosin has shown no major health effects in small quantities.


Creation








Wood rosin is a substance extracted from the stump of the long-leaf pine tree. Long-leaf pine trees are commonly found in the southeastern United States. The most common type of rat poisoning on the market today is the anti-coagulant rodenticide. Anti-coagulants work by depleting Vitamin K stores in the rodent's system. Vitamin K is a very important component in blood clotting. One way it does this is by suppressing the growth of Vitamin K in the intestinal tract, where much of it is produced. With the Vitamin K production halted, it is only a matter of days until the rodent's Vitamin K stores are completely depleted.








Along with the chemicals that inhibit Vitamin K production, rat poisons contain large doses of other anti-coagulants such as 4-hydroxycoumarin and indandione anti-coagulants. These chemicals cause trauma to the blood vessel walls, increasing the risk for damage and internal bleeding. This is the preferred type of rat bait, as the antidote to ingestion by animals or humans is Vitamin K.


Phosphides








Another type of rat poison is made with zinc phosphide. The zinc phosphide reacts with the rodent's stomach acid to form a gas called phosphine. Many rats have become resistant to the anti-coagulant rodenticides and in these cases the zinc phosphide works very well. For those with pets, zinc phospide is preferred because the poisons do not remain in the tissues of the rodent. If a cat or a dog gets hold of the poisoned rat, they should not be affected by the poison. However, if an animal gets into the zinc phosphide itself, aside from immediate vomiting there is no antidote to the poison as there is with the anti-coagulants above.


Calciferols


Calciferols (Vitamin D) are another type of rodenticide. These compounds work by affecting the levels of Vitamin D and calcium in the body. Ingesting Vitamin D in toxic doses causes hypercalcemia. This is a condition where the calcium level is raised to such a degree that the stomach, kidneys, lungs, blood vessels and heart are all damaged by calcification. Death of the rodent usually takes place within a week. Often calciferols and anti-coagulants are mixed in a bait, increasing the chances of death and decreasing the time involved.


Options


There are many other rodenticides on the market that are effective, but the above are the most popular. When selecting a rodenticide, be aware that since the poison takes a few days to work, you may have to deal with the smell of the rodents dying within the walls or in house crevices. Always use caution when setting out bait, as most doses are also harmful to pets and humans.

Remove Orange Fruit Stains







Oranges are a healthy addition to your diet.


Oranges are a delicious citrus fruit that is rich in Vitamin C. An orange is a healthy addition to your diet, but especially juicy oranges can stain your clothing. If left unattended, you may have difficulty removing the stain, though stain removal is still possible. Use supplies from home to remove orange fruit stains and return your garment or other item to its pre-stained condition.


Instructions


1. Prepare your stain removal solution in a bucket.


Mix 1/2 tsp. of dish washing liquid with 1 tbsp. white vinegar and lukewarm water in a bucket. Soak the orange fruit-stained article in the solution for 15 minutes.


2. Cool water prevents the stain from setting.


Rinse the garment with cool water and lay it on a clean towel, with the stained area face up.


3. A sponge absorbs some of the stain.








Pour isopropyl alcohol onto a clean sponge. Sponge the stain, starting at the middle of it and working your way out. Rinse off the sponge, if necessary, and add more alcohol to it. Continue to sponge, removing as much of the orange fruit stain, as possible.


4. Wash the garment according to directions on the care label. Add color safe bleach to the wash machine to remove any last trace of orange fruit stain.

The History Of Cervical Cancer







Cervical cancer is a major health concern for all women. For centuries, the cause of cervical cancer was unknown. It wasn't until the 20th century that scientists understood that the disease was caused by exposure to the human papillomavirus (HPV). Vaccines against some forms of the virus are now widely available, but for most of recorded history, the causes of cervical cancer were completely misunderstood.


Classical References


The disease has been known since ancient times. In 400 BCE, the Greek physician Hippocrates wrote about the disease and even attempted to treat the cancer with a procedure known as the trachelectomy, although he found that nothing he did could eradicate the cancer. This procedure, later used for a brief period in the 1940s, involves removing the cervix and linking the vaginal canal directly to the uterus.


Mistaken Theories of Causation


For centuries, doctors were confused as to the cause of cervical cancer. The first theory rose to prominence in 1842 in Florence, when a doctor noticed that married women and prostitutes were susceptible to cervical cancer, but nuns had a very low incidence of the cancer. However, because nuns did suffer from breast cancer, it was incorrectly determined that the cause of both diseases was tight corsets.


Flash forward to the 20th century. In the 1950s, doctors were convinced that cervical cancer was caused by smegma. In the 1970s, the prevailing thought in American medicine was that cervical cancer was linked to herpes, which was also incorrect.


The First Breakthrough


While the majority of doctors were completely in the dark when it came to understanding cervical cancer, one doctor had a breakthrough that came from an unlikely source. In the 1930s, Dr. Richard Shope of the Rockefeller University studied wild rabbits that had developed "horns," which upon further analysis, was caused by a virus that could be transmitted. This research eventually led to the discovery that cervical cancer was caused by a papillomavirus.

Dr. Shope paved the way for Dr. Harald zur Hausen's work in the 1980s. It was zur Hausen who, thanks to advances in DNA technology, was able to show that the virus was a papillomavirus. With the cause of cervical cancer finally understood, doctors could begin working on better treatments and vaccines.


Gardasil


In 2006, the vaccine Gardasil was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the prevention of cervical cancer. The vaccine targets select strains of the human papillomavirus, specifically types 6, 11, 16 and 18.

Proper amounts of minerals are required not only for the obvious reasons, such as strong bones, but also for the lesser known roles they play in other systems such as healing of wounds and normal ability to taste. The bottom line is that both of these nutrients must be kept in proper balance to remain healthy and to help prevent the onset of disease.
