Statin drugs inhibit acetyl-CoA production, which in turn inhibits the production of cholesterol. However, ubiquinone and dilochol are produced through the same process as cholesterol, so statins inhibit their production as well. Ubiquinone is a cellular nutrient used in the mitochondria. Some argue that today's emphasis on thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting produce removes the dirt-and-fertilizer-rich B12 that people often ate on the vegetables in the past, the Vegetarian Action website says.

Vegetarians should eat foods that contain or are fortified with B12 (cereals and soy products, for example) or take B12 supplements. So should people older than age 50, 10 to 30 percent of whom may have trouble absorbing it from animal products, the Vegan Society advises. The USDA recommends taking 2.4 micrograms per day and 2.8 micrograms if you're a nursing mother.

The Side Effects Of Iron Vitamins

Iron is an essential mineral found in many foods, especially red meat, poultry and fish, including organ meat. Iron is also found in nuts and legumes, tofu and soy, greens, potatoes, peas, green beans, broccoli and water melon. Iron helps produce hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Common Side Effects

The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that there is evidence that iron may interfere with the absorption of some medications. Experts recommend allowing a two-hour window between taking iron supplements and medication.


Iron and Children


One of the most dangerous side effects of iron is on children. Ferrous sulfate, a type of iron, is the No. 1 cause of accidental poisonings among children. Iron has been fatal to children who have ingested as little as 200 mg. Iron must be kept out of children's reach.


Who May Need More Iron?


People with iron deficiencies such as anemia will be advised to increase their iron intake by their doctor. Also, men and women who participate in intensive physical activity may also have low iron levels. Of these, the most prone groups to low iron are female athletes, distance runners and vegetarians. But because of the risk factors of excess iron, supplementation is best pursued under the care of a doctor.

Can a shot really melt away the pounds?


If you're on the cutting edge of weight loss news, you may have heard of so-called "weight loss injections." The idea that you can get a shot (or two) at the doctor's office and watch the fat melt away might sound appealing. But is it too good to be true? What are weight loss injections? Are they safe and effective?


Background


A weight loss injection is any drug or supplement injected by a doctor for the purpose of weight control. Most claim to "dissolve fat" or to have an effect on the how the body burns calories. Injections for weight loss usually require weekly visits to the doctor's office, but can often be administered by a nurse.








Types of Weight Loss Injectables








Three main weight loss injections are on the market:


hCG--Human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone produced during pregnancy. It is used for fertility treatments and as a tumor marker. Some doctors have prescribed hCG for weight loss in conjunction with ultra-low-calorie diets (less than 500 calories a day) believing it capable of burning adipose (fat) tissue and preventing the loss of lean muscle mass.


B-12--This is a vitamin essential for metabolic processes and overall health. Proponents claim the injections work by giving an extra boost of energy and improving the metabolism.


Lipotropics--They are naturally occurring compounds in the body that assist with metabolism. Injections are thought to work by speeding up the metabolism.


Are They Effective?


In a word, no. While hCG was once a very popular weight loss medication in the United States, in 1976, it became illegal to promote the drug as effective for weight loss. Since then, continued research, including one recent article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has warned against the use of hCG for weight loss, claiming that it is not effective. Vitamin B-12, while generally good for you in multivitamin form, has also not been proven effective for controlling weight, nor has it been FDA-approved as an injection for weight loss. As for lipotropic injections, there appears to be very little scientific research published on its use as a weight loss aid.


Are they safe?


None of these injectable weight loss solutions have been approved by the FDA as safe or effective. Further, many injections are often concoctions made up by the prescribing doctor, which means they have not been been through any clinical trials. So though there is little evidence against many injectable weight loss solutions, that's also because there has been so little investigation. Further, it typically takes the FDA some time to ban certain supplements. Never assume that a supplement is safe just because someone (even a doctor) is selling it.

As always, when considering any medical procedure, it is important to do your research and to discuss the procedure both with your specialist and with your primary care physician. Your regular doctor may have more insight about whether a procedure is right for you, given your medical history.


The bottom line

Ideas For An Eighth Grade Dance







Typically, the eighth grade dance occurs at the end of the school year to commemorate graduation from middle school. Theses dances tend to be semi-formal so choose themes, decorations and refreshments accordingly, but remember that these are eighth graders. Keep the atmosphere fun and the music geared to their tastes within reason, as this is not a high school prom.


Themes


Decide if the school's final dance is going to be semi-formal and if it needs an additional theme. Some fun ideas include a Hollywood theme, which involves decorating the gym with red bulletin board paper as the red carpet and painting cardboard to replicate famous Hollywood buildings. Encourage teens to get their photos taken on the red carpet. Another option, a Hawaiian theme, allows the dance committee to decorate with leis, sand buckets, hula hoops, and even host some hula contests. Serve some fruit punch in a volcano-shaped punch bowl.


Activities


In order to get the young teens on the dance floor, hire a DJ to play the current music and keep the flow of activities moving. Play interactive songs, such as the Cupid Shuffle, the Hustle or the Cha Cha Slide, which will fill the dance floor. For those unsure of the moves, ask the DJ to demonstrate the steps and the students will copy them. Rent a video game booth or a photo booth, where those students not interested in dancing can challenge their friends to a game or take silly poses with their buddies to print out and remember the night.


Music


Ask the DJ to create a playlist that includes some of the current hits and also features some songs about remembering the good times, hopes for the future and friendship. Some popular choices include Rascal Flatts' My Wish, Vitamin C's Graduation (Friends Forever) and Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).


Other Details


Determine a time to hold the dance, often on Saturday night before the year ends, in the early evening. Sell tickets for the event, stating the dress code for the event, if you want the students to wear formal dresses and suits.


Depending on the formality of the dance, order the food for the dance, geared to a teenager's taste. If it's a dinner and dance, consider serving pasta, salad and garlic bread, as it's usually a favorite with most teenagers. Repair A Waterdamaged Hardwood Floor

Wood and water just don't mix. Sealed and waxed floors may become stained if water sits on their surface for more than a few minutes. Here's repair the damage.


Instructions


Removing white stains from a surface finish


1. To remove a smoky white haze or a white spot, buff the finish with a soft cotton cloth and a very mild abrasive, such as whitening toothpaste, auto-polishing compound, or tobacco ash mixed with mineral oil, until the stain disappears (see A).


Removing black or white water stains from wood


2. Mask off the surrounding boards with painter's masking tape.


3. First remove any wax or surface finish. Use fine steel wool to remove wax, and sandpaper to remove a surface finish. Depending on the size of the repair area, hand-sand with a rubber sanding block (see B) or machine-sand with a random-orbit sander. In both cases, start with 80- or even 60-grit abrasive and sand to 100-grit. Sand just up to the edges of unaffected boards.








4. Mix oxalic acid crystals (available at paint or hardware stores) in 1 cup (8 fl oz/250 ml) or so of hot water and stir to dissolve them. Keep adding crystals until they won't dissolve anymore.


5. Pour, brush or sponge the solution on the stained area. When it is completely dry, brush off the crystals and repeat the process until the stain is gone.


6. Stain or seal, then refinish the affected area (see Replace a Wood Floorboard). Or, if the touch-up stands out too much, use the screen-and-overcoat method to restore the entire floor (see Restore a Dull, Worn Wood Floor).

Apricot As A Cancer Cure

There may be a way to cure cancer that doesn't destroy your health or force you into bankruptcy. In 1952, Dr. Ernst Krebs, Jr. from San Francisco wanted to find the ingredient that's missing from people's diets, The Hunzas, a primitive tribe, do not have cancer. Krebs discovered they eat a compound called amagdylin, also called laetrile or B17.








What is Amagdylin?


The highest concentration of amagdylin is in apricot seed kernels. To get to these soft kernels you have to break through the hard exterior.


The seeds taste bitter, so in order to get the recommended dose you can add it to your food or chop it up, add a teaspoon of honey or applesauce and swallow. According to Dr. Krebs, a person needs to eat seven or more apricot seeds per day making it impossible for cancer to develop. If you can't find apricot seeds, or don't like the taste, you can take one or two 100 milligram tablets of B17 vitamins per day.


If You Don't Have Cancer


If you want to keep cancer from developing in your body, start eating one or two apricot seeds per day. Gradually increase this until you are eating seven to ten apricot seeds per day. Stay away from eating things that have refined sugar, caffeine and white flour in them. Increase your consumption of raw foods and stay away from processed foods. Most fruit seeds contain B17, as do beans and wheat grass.


If You Have Cancer


If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you should B17 injected into your vein every day in the amount of 9 grams for 21 days and eat at least six apricot seeds per hour. Eat only one or two at a time when you first begin and slowly build to six. If you don't start slowly, the seeds can make you feel sick. If you don't like the idea of having a shot, then you can take up to eighteen 500-milligram tablets and up to six seeds per hour. Again, start out by eating only one or two seeds to begin with. By taking laetrile, your body produces more B12.


The Problem


Once you start the B17 regime, you have to keep taking it for the rest of your life. Your cancer shrinks, but does not go away. If you have a CAT scan or MRI, the cancer will still show.


Warnings


There are warnings if you take Laetrile. Laetrile forms thiocyanate. This can cause your blood pressure to lower. If you are taking blood pressure medicine or have heart problems, taking Laetrile may cause problems. Many people on the laetrile protocol also use proteolytic enzymes. Proteolytic enzymes are blood thinners. If you are on probiotics do not take laetrile. Taking the two together may increase free hydrogen cyanide, a colorless, volatile, extremely poisonous flammable liquid. Do not take the electromedicine treatment, Bob Beck Protocol, with Laetrile. Before combining Laetrile with any alternative cancer treatments or medications, talk to your doctor first.

Menopause & Water Retention

Most women have either heard horror stories about menopause or, conversely, how great it is to be beyond the time when you have to deal with menstrual periods and pregnancy worries. However, if the truth be known, a little of each is true. Menopause can be dicey. For some women, it's smooth-sailing; for others, not so much so. Things change; the body changes and sometimes not for the better.


Hormones Shift


Prior to peri-menopause, your body is functioning as it is supposed to. You have the proper amounts of hormones that you need to sustain and provide for a healthy reproductive system. Your hair and skin are healthy because estrogen is coursing through your body. And then ... the hormones shift, your body starts to close up shop and you notice a difference in your body. Your weight may not change but you may notice a not-so-subtle thickening in your mid region and you may feel, and look, swollen and puffy.


Estrogen Surges








According to Dr. Charles Tiff, associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, puffiness and water retention may be the result of fluctuating hormones. When there is a surge in estrogen production, this results in the production of aldosterone. Aldosterone is a hormone that prompts the kidneys to retain water. Retained fluid tends to collect in the abdomen and breasts.


HRT


Fluid retention in menopausal women can also be caused by undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT). If you are taking HRT and fluid retention is really causing you a problem and making you uncomfortable, Dr. Susan Lark, director of the PMS and Menopause Self-Help Center in Los Altos, California, and author of Premenstrual Syndrome Self-Help Book and Menopause Self-Help Book, recommends that you ask your doctor to lower your dosage.


Dr. Weed's Advice


According to Susan S. Weed and Project-Aware.com, fluid retention may very well be a sign that there is a weakness in your kidneys and adrenal glands as well as a problem with your circulation or even your heart. Weed notes that if you have a tendency toward bloating, the kidneys have to work extra hard and in the process become fatigued and can't do their job. She doesn't recommend taking diuretics to get rid of excess fluid because this can deplete potassium, which can lead to porous bone disease (osteoporosis). Weed also points out that too much vitamin C can stress the kidneys, resulting in water retention. Raw Diet For Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a fairly common disorder, and many people are unaware that they even have it. The thyroid is an extremely important gland that controls metabolism, growth, blood calcium levels, energy, oxygen, body fat and weight loss. A raw food diet is often advocated to combat hypothyroidism because it seeks to provide your body with all the essential vitamins and minerals through natural, raw foods that contain less fat, preservatives and other harmful agents.


What Is Hypothyroidism?


Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by a deficient or inefficient production or use of hormones from the thyroid. There are many types of hypothyroidism, ranging from conditions where the body's immune system attacks the thyroid (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), to an overactive gland or even a viral or bacterial infection. People with hypothyroidism are commonly lethargic, have a slow pulse and an intolerance to cold. They may uncontrollably gain weight without being able to lose it, be constipated and numb in the extremities. In some cases, confusion, dementia and depression can occur. Iodine is especially important, as a deficiency with it can cause hypothyroidism with goiter, or an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. Iodine is added to many of our foods today, such as table salt, so you likely won't need to worry about this one. In fact, you may need to be careful that you don't overdo it on the iodine, as too much can be just as dangerous. If you aren't in the habit of salting your food, find different sources than iodized table salt. Most saltwater fish, seaweed and seafood contain ample amounts of iodine. Try sushi or sashimi, for example.








Another important substance to consider is tyrosine. It's an important amino acid that works with iodine in the thyroid gland to create thyroxine, a hormone that controls metabolic rate and promotes growth. For hypothyroidic children, this is particularly important. The amino acid itself can help depression and alleviate lethargy, two common symptoms people with hypothyroidism face.


Tyrosine can be found in whole grains, wheats and oats. It's also available in abundance in dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese. Many fruits and vegetables have tyrosine, particularly bananas and avocados. Also try almonds, sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds. Tyrosine is, of course, also present in many meat sources, such as lean chicken and pork.


What Raw Foods Should I Avoid?








The foods you want to avoid depend largely on a few factors. First, are you on any medications? Recently, many foods have been termed "goitrogenic," or known to make hypothyroidism worse. Whether or not this is true is still being tested; however, these foods are known to have compounds and substances that may actually counteract any medication you're taking. The identified foods include: babassu, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, corn, kale, millet, peaches, pears, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas, strawberries and turnips. Talk to your doctor about this and what specific foods you need to avoid to prevent a possible interaction with your medication.


The good news is that if you like these foods, cooking them is believed to destroy the enzymes that contribute to the goitrogenic properties of the food.


The Evidence


According to Dr. Todd Nippolt, M.D., an endocrinologist with the Mayo Clinic, there is no supporting scientific evidence that any certain hypothyroidism diet exists that will improve your thyroid function. A 1957 experiment at the University of Madras, India, however, did find that certain foods can contain goitrogenic substances which induce an enlargement of the thyroid, thus substantiating the claims that certain foods may indeed be dangerous to your health.
